Computational Linguistics is one of the areas in which the University
of Toronto Department of Computer Science is recruiting new faculty
this year.  Both junior and senior applicants will be considered.

The Department of Computer Science invites applications for several
tenure-track and tenured positions at all levels. The Department is an
international leader in Computer Science research and education with
an unparalleled breadth of research diversity.  Faculty members enjoy
an extremely strong international reputation reflected in their awards
and honours, involvement in international organizations, and
prestigious positions as editors for leading computer science
journals. The Department is currently undergoing a significant
expansion in complement and research support.

The Department considers excellence in research and teaching to be of
prime importance and will consider applicants in all areas of computer
science. We are particularly interested in the following areas:
systems, including software engineering, distributed computing,
networks and distributed information systems; human-computer
interaction; natural language understanding and computational
linguistics; neural networks. Salary will be determined according to
the successful applicant's experience and qualifications.  The
starting date of the appointments is flexible and could start as early
as January, 1999. The positions are on any one of the three campuses:
St.  George (downtown Toronto), Scarborough (east end), and Erindale
(west end).

Toronto is a vibrant and cosmopolitan city, considered to be one of
the most enjoyable cities in the world in which to work and live.

University in Bangkok, Thailand has an opening for a "foreign"
(i.e. non-Thai) Faculty position.

Qualifications: Postgraduate degree in General Linguistics, M.A.
essential, with teaching and research experience.  Ph.D. preferred.
Knowledge of Thai/Southeast Asian Linguistics desirable.

Duties: - teach  general linguistics and applied
linguistics courses, in undergraduate and graduate levels (minimum 3
courses per semester)
        - academic consultation
        - language editor of English articles in the Department
of Linguistics's Journal (Journal of Langauge and Linguistics)

Initial contract is for one year, renewable.

The cost of living in Bangkok in roughly three times less than that in
the US.  Meals for one day is about 100 baht or less.  A condo apt
ranges from 3,000 baht per month.  the exchange rate is 40 baht for a
dollar

JAPANESE LANGUAGE & LINGUISTICS

The Department of East Asian Languages & Cultures, University of
Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, seeks to make a full-time, tenure track
appointment in Japanese Language and Linguistics, at the Assistant
Professor level, effective August 21, 1999.  Specialty in language
pedagogy or second-language acquisition preferred.  A completed
doctorate in hand by the appointment date, good evidence of strong
scholarly potential, and relevant teaching experience are required.
Candidates should be prepared to to assume responsibility for the
advanced levels of a comprehensive Japanese language instructional
program, and to participate in a both the undergraduate and graduate
curriculum in her/his area of specialization, including the training
of doctoral students.  Salary is competitive.  For full consideration,
