Subject: Sociolinguistics position, Georgetown University

Georgetown University Department of Linguistics is pleased to announce a
tenure track position at the Assistant Professor level (pending final
administrative and budget approval) in the Sociolinguistics program.

Our primary interest is a candidate whose specialty is sociolinguistic
variation, especially as it relates to both language theory and social
life. However, we also encourage applications from sociolinguists with
other specializations, including (but not limited to) language contact and
change, computer mediated communication, language ideology, gender and
language, pidgins and creoles, developmental pragmatics, language and
social theory. The seven-member sociolinguistics program resides in a large
linguistics department involved mostly in graduate education, with
opportunities for reaching out to undergraduates.

Applicants should have a Ph.D., an active research program and evidence of
scholarly productivity, as well as demonstrated teaching ability.

Deadline for consideration of applications is December 1. Send letter of
application, curriculum vitae, representative publications, and names of
three references who may be contacted to: Sociolinguistics Search Committee,
Linguistics Department, Georgetown University, Washington DC 20057.
Applications from women and members of minority groups are encouraged.
Georgetown University is an AA/EO employer.

Subject: Recommendations re book indexers

The MIT Press is seeking indexers for books on theoretical linguistics,
psycholinguistics, and philosophy of language. If you have had such a
book indexed by a person whose work you would highly recommend, would
you be willing to share that person's name with us? (The work is
occasional, on a freelance basis.)

Please reply to me directly (amark at mit.edu or amark at mediaone.net).
