Subject:  Germanic/Linguistics Assistant Professor, U. of Michigan

The Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures and the Program in
Linguistics at the University of Michigan seek to fill a joint position in
Germanic and Linguistics at the Assistant Professor level, to begin in
September, 1999, with the possibility of upgrading it to a senior position
for an outstanding senior candidate.  Responsibilities include teaching
undergraduate and graduate courses in German sociolinguistics and
dialectology.

Applicants with an interest in historical sociolinguistics and language
contact are also welcome.  Ph.D. must be completed by September 1, 1999.
Evidence of excellent teaching and research potential is essential.  Send
letter of application, cv, three confidential letters of reference and one

Applications are invited (pending authorization) for the position of
Director of the English Language Institute (5-year term, renewable) with
tenure at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor in the Program in
Linguistics.  The ELI is an independent academic unit within the College of
Literature, Science and Arts.  Its main mission is to provide courses in
English as a Second Language and English for Academic Purposes for
international students enrolled at the Ann Arbor campus, and to conduct
research and development relevant to that mission.  We seek outstanding
applicants with established teaching and research expertise in English for
Academic Purposes and with the capacity to provide the institute with
creative leadership in both its teaching and testing divisions.  Further
specialization is sought in one or more subdisciplines in linguistics,
including discourse analysis, second language acquisition, applied
phonetics, sociolinguistics or psycholinguistics.  A letter of application,
CV, one representative publication, and three letters of recommendation
should be sent by November 15, 1998, to:
