PhD STUDENTSHIPS for October 1999

Application deadline: April 30th 1999
Applications received after this deadline may be considered, but this
cannot be guaranteed.

The Information Technology Research Institute at the University of Brighton
invites applications for two three-year studentships to commence in October
1999: one EPSRC award and one University-funded studentship. The studentships
will be awarded in one (or more) of the following topics in Computational
Linguistics:

    document generation (including text generation):
        architectures;
        corpus analysis;
        discourse (syntax, semantics and pragmatics);
        evaluation;
        hybrid generation;
        implementation;
        layout;
        multilinguality;
        diagrammatic reasoning;
        integration of pictures in text;
        multimodality;
        representation languages;
        tools

    lexicons:
        corpus analysis;
        evaluation;
        lexical statistics;
        lexicalized grammars;
        lexicography;
        lexicon induction from text;
        multilinguality;
        representation;
        tools;
        tuning;
        word sense disambiguation;

    natural language interfaces:
        dialogue;
        interface design;
        tools

    information extraction:
        text mining.

Applicants should have a good honours degree or equivalent in Computer
Science, Computational Linguistics or Linguistics.

EPSRC studentships are restricted to UK or EU residents. Residents of
the UK are eligible for fees and a maintenance allowance; other EU
residents are eligible for fees only (and so would need to be able to
support themselves during their studies).  The EPSRC baseline rate of
maintenance allowance is currently approx 6,455 pounds sterling per

The University funded studentship is at the same rate and is not restricted.
