The Department of English at the University of Alabama invites
applications for a one year visiting assistant professor position
(with the option of applying for a tenure track assistant professor
position for 2000-2001) for a linguist who could teach both
undergraduate linguistics courses (in particular an introductory
linguistics course and a history of English) and also graduate courses
in our M.A.-TESOL Program, starting in August of 1999.

Duties include teaching, research and service; our M.A.-TESOL faculty
work closely with our colleagues in UA's English Language Institute.
A Ph.D. in linguistics, applied linguistics or TESOL is required, with
strengths in the areas of second language writing and
classroom-oriented research.

Competence in at least one other language is expected, and
international teaching experience is highly desirable.  Preference
will be given to candidates who have an interest in working with our
faculty in rhetoric and composition, and who would welcome
collaboration with colleagues in foreign language departments.  We
will also give preference to candidates who see research opportunities
in (1) our large freshman composition program with separate sections
for non-native English speakers, (2) UA's independently-administered
intensive English Language Institute with a large internal program and
a number of external programs each year, and (3) UA's well-developed
self-instructional language program (Critical Languages).  The

The Department of Spanish and Latin American Studies has seven full-time
staff and teaches undergraduate courses at all levels in the Spanish
language, Spanish and Latin American social and political history and
various area of Hispanic culture. It also supervises postgraduate research
in these fields. The successful applicant will participate in the teaching,
coordination and development of the Department's language program at all
levels.

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA: native or near-native competence in Spanish;
postgraduate research degree in Spanish linguistics, preferably with a
special interest in second language teaching and/or learning, and a
documented commitment to extend such research; demonstrated excellence in
teaching Spanish as a second language at all levels in tertiary
institutions as well as an understanding of equity and diversity principles.

DESIRABLE: published and ongoing research in the area of second language
acquisition; interest in the application of new technologies to second
language teaching and ability to participate elsewhere in the Department's
multidisciplinary program.

The salary range is AU$48,678 - AU$57,806 per year depending on
qualifications and experience.
