Internship Opportunity
Spoken User Interface Design, Active Voice Corporation - Seattle, WA

Active Voice Corporation, a rapidly growing and dynamic telecommunications
software company, is seeking a Spoken User Interface Design Intern to push
the limits of technology in developing a voice activated unified messaging
system. Active Voice is the world's leading independent provider of
PC-based voice processing systems, which include voicemail, automated
attendant, and call management software solutions. We are looking to take
our technology to the next level by using spoken dialogue as the engine
which drives our products.

The Spoken User Interface Intern will function in the Advanced
Products and Technology department, which is the research arm of
Active Voice Corporation. This position will leverage research and
evaluation of current spoken dialogue systems, the analysis of
discourse/conversational patterns, and human-computer interaction to
build and refine the next generation spoken user interface, using
speech recognition and speech synthesis, for our telecommunications
software solutions.

The ideal candidate for this position will demonstrate strength in a
combination of the following areas: spoken dialogue, human communication
patterns, and conversation progression; verbal and written communication
skills in American English; critical thinking and analytical problem
solving; technical capability/propensity for learning technical concepts;
and computer programming, voice over IP, and/or IP telephony. This is an
outstanding opportunity for students pursuing a BS, MS, or Ph.D. in
Linguistics, Anthropology, Psychology, Sociology, Technical Communication,
Speech Pathology, or Computer Science looking to work on cutting-edge speech
recognition technology. This is a full-time internship during the summer and
will ideally turn into a part-time internship during fall term 1999.
