SECOND CALL, FURTHER INFORMATION

18th Scandinavian Conference of Linguistics,
Lund University
May 18th-20th, 2000

As announced earlier, the 18th Scandinavian Conference of Linguistics will
be hosted by Lund University. We can now add the following information
(note that all the information below, and more, is available on our
conference website).

a) The conference will focus to a certain extent on the following topics.

- Optimality Theory (with reference to phonology and syntax)
- Language and Prehistory
- Linguistic relativity
- Dialectology and language variation

b) Papers from any field of linguistics are welcome (even if they do not
correspond to one of the topics). We wish to remind that the deadline for
receipt of abstracts is January 15th, 2000. Abstracts, which should be no
longer than one A4 page, should be sent in electronic form (since we intend
to post abstracts on our website).

c) The conference fee is SEK 400. Students pay a reduced fee of SEK 300.
The fee for members of the Nordic Association of Linguists is SEK 200.
Accepted participants will receive an invoice prior to the conference.

d) The conference will also include the following 5 workshops

1) Workshop on Comparative Circum-Baltic Syntax

It has been suggested in the literature that there are some phenomena in
the languages spoken around the Baltic Sea which point towards a "Baltic
Sprachbund" at least to some limited extent.
The familiar assumption behind the notion of a Sprachbund is that languages
that are situated geographically close to each other, although of different
origin, might have one way or mutual influence on the neighbouring
languages. This workshop wishes to explore the possible influences
on each other's morpho-syntactic structure between the circum-Baltic
languages: the Mainland Scandinavian languages (Swedish, Danish,
Norwegian), Finno-Ugric; (Finnish, Estonian); Slavic (Russian, Polish) and
Baltic ones (Latvian, Lithuanian). The papers should cover at least two
languages not from the same family group (e.g. Swedish and Estonian, or
Russian and Latvian) and may be on any topic (e.g. the expression of
definiteness, the use of case, morphological structure). To this workshop
papers from any theoretical framework and also detailed comparative
descriptive papers are welcomed.

2) Workshop on Optimality-theoretic approaches to Scandinavian languages

Keynote speakers:	Peter Sells, Stanford,
			Sten Vikner, Stuttgart

This workshop will be devoted to papers in OT discussing phenomena in the
Scandinavian languages, widely understood to comprise Danish, Faroese,
Finnish, Icelandic, Norwegian, Sami and Swedish. We invite contributions
dealing with phonology, syntax and/or semantics.

Each talk is allotted 30 minutes +10 minutes for discussion. Abstracts
should not exceed two pages, including examples. Since the organisers
intend to post the abstracts on the conference website we prefer to receive
abstracts electronically.

3) Workshop on studies within Construction Grammar

The purpose of the workshop is to get together linguists who are interested
in Construction Grammar from theoretical as well as applied aspects.
Therefore, we welcome both contributions which throw light on how
Construction Grammar differs from other grammatical theories, and empirical
studies of specific structures (syntactic, pragmatic and/or semantic)
within the framework of Construction Grammar.

4) Workshop on Comparative Scandinavian Grammar

Quite a lot of research has been conducted on issues relating to
differences between the Scandinavian languages. Most of this research has
focussed on contrasts between the Mainland Scandinavian languages (Swedish,
Danish, and Norwegian) on the one hand and Icelandic on the other. Less
work has been done on differences between the Mainland Scandinavian
languages.
To our workshop we would like to invite papers on comparative Scandinavian
grammar in general. However, we encourage in particular contributions
focussing on syntactic variations within the Mainland Scandinavian area,
including dialectal variation.
We welcome research reports conducted within all kinds of theoretical
frameworks, as well as presentations of new data.

Each talk is allotted 30 minutes +10 minutes for discussion. Abstracts
should not exceed two pages, including examples. Since the organisers
intend to post the abstracts on the conference website we prefer to receive
abstracts electronically.

5) Workshop on Typology, Relativity and Prehistory

Conveners: Jan-Olof Svantesson, Sven Strömqvist and Åke Viberg
Dept. of Linguistics, Lund University

Recently, the relationships between the three areas general typology,
linguistic relativity and the prehistory of language have drawn a lot of
attention. The purpose of this workshop is to try to strike a balance
between universal and language-specific characteristics of the world's
languages across space and time and the consequences of this for our
conception of language and thinking. Papers related to one or more of the
three areas are welcome as contributions to this workshop.
