Dear linguists,

MALAYSIA INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON LANGUAGES, LITERATURES AND CULTURES
-MICOLLAC 1999

I'm pleased to announce the first international conference on languages,
literatures and cultures organised by the Faculty of Modern Languages
and Communication, University Putra Malaysia, Malaysia. The theme for
MICOLLAC 1999 (or Malaysia International Conference on Languages,
Literatures and Cultures) is "Languages, Literatures, and Cultures:
Interconnections in the New Millenium" and the conference will be held
from the 10-12 May 1999 in Kuala Kumpur.

The keynote speakers are Dr. Ibrahim Ahmad Bajunid, Prof. Dr. Brian
Tomlinson, Dr. Martin Cortazzi and Prof. Dato' Dr. Asmah Hj. Omar.

The objectives are:

 To discuss the contribution of languages, literatures, and cultures
towards the process of globalisation.
 To assess the role played by languages, literatures, and cultures in
the transformation of society and education.
 To address the use of languages, literatures, and cultures as a
vehicle of communication.

Focus Areas:

Papers describing and discussing research results, theories,
vapplications or some thematic ideological investigations related to
languages, literatures and cultures may be submitted.

 The English Language, Malay and other Asian Indigenous Languages
 International Languages
 Language Planning and Policy
 Languages for Specific Purposes
 Bilingualism
 Translation Studies
 Genre Studies
 Contrastive Rhetorics
 Literary Movements
 Comparative Literature
 Language, Culture and Communication
 Language and the Global Network

Abstract and Call for Papers

Abstracts and papers should be written in either English or Malay and
relevant to the conference theme. Abstracts of about 250 words should be
submitted by February 10th 1999 (extendable). Please use Microsoft Word
version 6.0 or Word '97.
