Please keep conferences announcement as short as you can; LINGUIST

The 1999 Annual Meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of
Science will be held in Anaheim, CA, from 21-26 January. The meeting will take
place at the Anaheim Hilton and Towers, and the Anaheim Marriott.

Some symposia of particular interest to linguists at this meeting include:

"Grammar: What's Innate?" (organized by David Pesetsky) Friday 9-12 AM
[Neurobiology, brain and Behavior track]

"Southern California Indian Languages at the Millennium" (organized by Pamela
Munro) Friday 2:30-5:30 PM [Geology, Geography and History track]

"The Nature and Etiology of Specific Language Impairment in Children"
(organized by Richard Schwartz) Saturday 9-12 AM [Neurobiology, Brain and
Behavior track]

Prof. Peter Ladefoged of UCLA will give a topical lecture on "Sounds of the
World's Languages" on Saturday at 8:00 AM.

Section Z (Linguistics and Language Science) will hold its annual business
meeting on Friday evening at 8:00 PM in the Rancho Las Palmas room in the
Marriott. All AAAS members with an interest in language science are invited to
attend, and to propose topics for symposia that might be offered at next
year's meeting (in Washington, DC).

Further information on the meeting, including a full program of sessions
across a wide spectrum of scientific disciplines, can be found on the web at
http://www.aaas.org/meetings/scope.

The AAAS continues to be an important forum in which linguists can make the
case for our discipline to a wider scientific audience. These meetings also
offer excellent opportunities for to sample a range of work in other sciences
as well, of course. I encourage everyone who can arrange to be in Anaheim at
this time (and who can take time off from Disneyland, the Mighty Ducks, etc.)
to participate - and also to join the AAAS. I will be happy to answer any
questions I can about AAAS or about this meeting.

- Stephen R. Anderson
(Secretary, Section Z)
