Dear Linguist

 There were a couple of inaccuracies in the references provided in my
 summary. Thanks to Marc Picard for correcting them, and for the new
 information.

"The book written by Ann Cook is:

 American accent training : a guide to speaking and pronouncing colloquial
 American
 English
               Ann Cook ; illustrated by Holly Forsyth.
               New York : Barron's, c1991.
               Includes index.published by Heinle & Heinle.

 *Pronouncing American English* was written by Gertrude F. Orion, and the
 second edition has just been published by Mass Market Paperback.

Picard, M, "English Flapping and the feature [vibrant]"  was published in
the journal *English Language and Linguistics* 1 (2):285-294 (1997).

 "Avery & Ehrlich's *Teaching American English Pronunciation*, is available
 at <http://www.amazon.co.uk
