Cornell University: The Department of Linguistics seeks to hire a
historical linguist specializing in the comparative grammar of the
Indo-European languages. The appointment will begin July 1, 2000. A
tenure-track assistant professorship (PhD required) is planned, but a
more senior appointment might be possible, and more advanced
candidates are therefore also invited to apply. Applicants should
have a substantial background in general linguistics as well as
mastery of historical linguistic principles and methods, philological
expertise, and knowledge of the synchronic and historical grammars of
the major ancient IE languages. In addition to advanced courses in
historical linguistics, IE linguistics, and ancient IE languages, the
appointee will be expected to teach linguistics courses of general
interest on a regular basis. Other responsibilities include advising
and supervising undergraduate and graduate students, general
participation in linguistics department affairs, and working with
faculty and students in the linguistics-classics program in Greek and
Latin linguistics. Applicants should send statements, vitae, and
copies of published and/or unpublished scholarly work to Historical
Linguistics Search Committee, Department of Linguistics, Morrill Hall,
Cornell University, Ithaca, NY 14853-4701 USA; at least three letters
of recommendation should also be sent directly to the committee. To
ensure full consideration, applications and supporting materials
should be received by October 8, 1999. AA/EOE.
