Call for Papers
AAAL 2000 Convention, March 11-14, 2000

The overall topic of the 2000 convention of the American Association
for Applied Linguistics (AAAL) is "Crossing Boundaries." In line with
this theme, we are organizing a colloquium proposal entitled
"CROSS-CULTURAL PRAGMATICS: INTERACTIONS BETWEEN NATIVE AND NONNATIVE
SPEAKERS." In this colloquium, we hope to bring together researchers
interested in pragmatic interference, pragmatic transfer,
interlanguage pragmatics, and pragmatic failure as they present
themselves in native/nonnative speaker interactions. In particular,
we encourage submissions that work with non-elicited, spontaneous
interaction, either telephone data or face-to face-interaction.

Organizers: Andrea Golato and Carmen Taleghani-Nikazm

Organization:
Of the abstracts we receive, we will select 5 and submit them together
as a colloquium proposal to the office of the AAAL (American
Association for Applied Linguistics). Confirmation of receipt of
proposals will be sent by e-mail. We will notify you within 2 weeks
of submission deadline whether or not we will include your abstract in
our colloquium proposal.

Submission:
Please submit 2 copies of a 300-word abstract typed on a single page.
In the upper left-hand corner of one copy, place the presenter's name,
address, phone and fax numbers, e-mail address, and institutional
affiliation. Do not put any identification on the other copy. Do NOT
include bibliographies or biodata, and do not type on the back of any
sheet. Please submit to

             COGNITIVE SCIENCE SOCIETY CONFERENCE 1999

        	    Call for Participation

You are cordially invited to join us for the 21st Annual Meeting of
the Cognitive Science Society at Simon Fraser University's downtown
campus in Vancouver, British Columbia. Vancouver is a spectacular
setting nestled at the foot of Coastal Range mountains on Burrard
Inlet and complemented by a thriving, multi-cultural urban
atmosphere. We hope that the conference will provide a fine mix of
academic and extra-curricular pleasures.

The Meeting will take place in three full days on August 19-21st. We
expect most people to arrive on Wednesday, August 18th and depart on
Sunday, August 22nd - though we hope some of you will come for a
longer stay.

This year, the main conference program will be preceded, on August
18th, by a day of workshops and tutorials. There will be a workshop on
teaching cognitive science, and four tutorials on cognitive
architectures, including Soar, ACT-R, Cogent, and PDP++. These
tutorials are designed to introduce architectures to potential users,
and are supported by a contribution from the Office of Naval Research.

The program for the conference will comprise over 100 refereed paper
presentations and invited symposia organized by Zenon Pylyshyn,
Fernando Ferreira, David Rosenthal, Ian Gold and Joseph Stemberger.
There will be two poster sessions/receptions on the first two evenings
of the conference.

The conference will officially close on Saturday night with an
optional dinner cruise aboard M.V. Britania. The cruise will provide
an opportunity for everyone to gather in one place, share some good
food and enjoy the spectacular scenery of Burrard Inlet.
