The Department of Linguistics at Northwestern University anticipates a
full-time tenure-track assistant professorship in syntax with starting
date of September 1, 2000.  Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in
linguistics or a related field by the starting date.  We seek
candidates with a primary specialization in syntax whose work
addresses the connections between syntax and other components of the
grammar (e.g., phonology, semantics, information structure).
Preference will be given to candidates with language breadth and/or
expertise in computational, experimental, or quantitative
methodologies.

			      ESL LECTURER
		       DEPARTMENT OF LINGUISTICS
			NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY

The Department of Linguistics at Northwestern University seeks a
Lecturer to coordinate the ESL Program which it administers for the
Graduate School and to direct the new International Summer Institute
for incoming international graduate students and visitors.
Responsibilities include curriculum development and instructor
training for both programs; oral proficiency testing of potential
international teaching assistants; advising and consultation on issues
related to English proficiency; and teaching two quarter-length
courses in Linguistics each year, in areas such as bilingualism,
second language acquisition, or applied linguistics.

This is a 12-month, full-time, non-tenure-track, renewable appointment
with an initial two-year term.  The starting date is January 1, 2000,
or later, though not later than June 1, 2000.

Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in Linguistics, TESOL, or a related field
by the starting date.  Substantial experience teaching ESL to
international graduate students, including TAs, is required.
Experience in program administration and curriculum development is
highly desirable.

The Department of Linguistics, University of Chicago, expects to fill
a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level beginning
Fall 2000. We are looking for a scholar of exceptional promise with
high competence in Phonology. The successful candidate should have
demonstrated a research agenda that seeks to establish new trends of
scholarship. He or she will be expected to teach at both the graduate
and undergraduate levels.
