HISTORIC(AL) OPPORTUNITY AT SUSSEX!


TEACHING BURSARY IN LINGUISTICS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SUSSEX


The Linguistics group at the University of Sussex, located in
Brighton, England, is offering a teaching bursary for a postgraduate
research student, beginning October 1999 (negotiable within limits).
The successful applicant will register for the degree of DPhil (=
PhD; three years' award) or MPhil (two years' award). The preferred
areas of research for this award are historical linguistics and the
sociolinguistic study of language change, two of the research
strengths of the Sussex group, but the award may be held for work in
any area that the group is able to supervise. The group's names
appear below, together with their specialisms.

The value of the award (at 1999 prices) is 9710 pounds per year,
including tuition fees at the rate for HEC students (2610 pounds).
The award may be held part-time, with support pro rata, but
full-time applicants will be preferred.

The successful applicant will be expected to teach (or do other
related work) in general linguistics for up to six hours a week
during term time (maximum 25 weeks in the year) as part of the
conditions of the award. Appropriate training will be given. S/he
will also participate in research seminars organized by the group.
S/he will receive the standard working facilities of other
postgraduate students in the highly-regarded School of Cognitive and
Computing Sciences, where the studentship will be located.

It would help us to come to a quick decision if you would duplicate
your formal application by sending Professor Trask a CV with a
statement of your area of research interest, and naming three
academic referees (exceptionally two), one of whom should be your
principal tutor during your previous degree programme. E-mail

Syntax (especially comparative syntax and syntactic typology); Hausa
and other Chadic languages; aphasiology

RICHARD COATES PhD (Cambridge)

Historical linguistics, onomastics, sociology of language,
morphology, phonology; place-names of England; Channel Islands
French, the medieval languages of the British Isles

Joint supervision with other groups, including Computational
Linguistics (in Artificial Intelligence) and Psychology is possible.

There is an extended deadline for funded PhD studentships at Queen
Margaret University College, Edinburgh.  (originally posted on
LINGUIST 10-764).

Please post on dept noticeboards and pass on this information to
students and ex-students (e.g. Speech and Language Therapists)
who might be interested.

The 3-year PhD studentships (minimum 6,455 pounds per year ) are in
the areas of:

*  child speech development
*  stuttering
*  acquired cognitive/linguistic deficits
*  speech production*

contact phone numbers for each studentship.  Note the pdf description
gives the deadline as "28 May 1999" but this has been extended till
the end of July 1999 at the latest, although there may in fact be
interviews before that date, especially for the acquired
cognitive/linguistic deficits area.  Please check with the contact
person for each grant for details and up-to-date information.

**The "speech production" studentship is funded by the EPSRC who cover
fees and maintainance for UK applicants but fees only for EU
applicants. This one is not open to applicants from outwith the EU.
