(ii) FLUENCY AND ITS TEACHING
Marie-Nolle Guillot (University of East Anglia)

"This book brings back to centre stage the neglected area of fluency.
Not only does it re-examine the existing research but it analyses
authentic texts and shows how the resulting ideas can give rise to
lively activities to stimulate the growth of fluency amongst second
language learners. The book should be relevant to a large number of
readers and offers something which, as far as I know, no other book
does."
Professor Richard Towell, University of Salford

KEY FEATURES
The book is both an enquiry into fluency and an argument for doing it
pedagogical justice
Language teachers, applied linguists, linguists and their students
should find this book an accessible and indispensable companion to the
teaching and study of oral language, with French as its domain of
application

DESCRIPTION
We can all recognize fluency and practise to be fluent, but do not
understand what linguistic and paralinguistic operations are involved.
This book tries to solve this puzzle. It begins by exploring perceptions
of fluency to understand their common denominators. It goes on to
pinpoint the specific features which promote fluency while emphasising
its relative and interactional nature. These analyses produce both a
methodological framework and a pedagogical strategy, illustrated by
sample classroom activities.

CONTENTS
1. Fluency and Dictionary Definitions: a Stepping Stone
2. Interlocutors' Perception of Fluency: Aspects and International
Impact
3. Factors of Fluency: a Framework for Teaching/Learning
4. Relativity and Negotiation in Verbal Interactions
5. Discourse/Form Features of Verbal Fluency - Spontaneous Speech
6. Discourse/Form Features of Verbal Fluency - Planned Speech
7. Paralinguistic Features and Fluency
Conclusion
