CALL FOR PAPERS

The Annual Meeting of the American Dialect Society will be held with the
Linguistic Society of America January 6-9 at the Palmer House Hilton in
Chicago.

In one session, papers which focus on variation in the Midwest will be
featured; in addition, of course, we invite the usual wide range of papers
on language and dialect variety.

This year's Word of the Year selection expands to several competitions: the
Words of the Decade, Century, and Millennium. There will also be the usual
new books reception, our luncheon with a distinguished speaker, and a new
ADS T-shirt - the second in our "Pioneer" series, featuring Louise Pound
(on a bicycle).

If you would like to be a contributing part of all this, send your abstract
now for inclusion in a program fast filling up. Hard copy is acceptable,
but e-mail submissions are vastly preferred. Please include, with your
abstract, your name, snail-mail address, institutional affiliation, and
request for any equipment which you may need for your presentation. (You
need not request an overhead projector.)

Send your abstract and accompanying information to:

preston at pilot.msu.edu
or, if e-mail is not available to you, to
Dennis R. Preston
4409 Copperhill Drive
Okemos MI 48864 USA

Please be so kind as to send a duplicate to

Aallan at aol.com
or, if e-mail is not available to you, to
Allan Metcalf
English Department
MacMurray College
Jacksonville, IL 62650 USA

August 16 is the absolute deadline for receipt of abstracts, but the
program is likely to be filled if you wait that long.
