The Department of Linguistics at the University of California, San Diego
has a tenure-track opening at the Assistant Professor level for a
specialist in phonology starting July 1, 2000.  A Ph.D. in linguistics is
required. A letter of application, a curriculum vitae, representative work,
and names of three referees (with email addresses and fax numbers) should

To be considered for an interview at the LSA meeting in January,

JOB DESCRIPTION: Translation Manager for Traditional Chinese
REPORTING TO: QA/Translation Manager (Beijing)
BASED: Taiwan or Beijing
DATE: June 18th, 1999

1. SUMMARY OF JOB DESCRIPTION
To provide an effective language function that meets the current requirements of
the Company, help deliver products on time and at a linguistic quality level
that meets customer expectations. The Translation Manager has overall
responsibility for the linguistic monitoring and quality control of outsourced
translation to external resources for Traditional Chinese.

2. RESPONSIBILITIES
The Translation Manager has to participate in all project-related activities
from the start of the project until the end, including meetings, conference
calls and any other relevant activities as part of the production team.
-Contract analysis
-Language review/evaluation
-Translation strategy
-Terminology preparation and maintenance
-Style guide
-Act as a client liaison for linguistic related issues
-Assist the Project Manager in management of external Traditional Chinese
resources.
-Assist Resource Management in monitoring and resolving quality problems with
external resources.

3. REQUIREMENTS
For our current vacancy we require a native Traditional Chinese speaker with
fluent English skills.
-Education background in Languages/Translation/Computational Linguistics
-Preferably 1-2 years experience in a language / co-ordination role.
-A software background is a distinct advantage
-Proven strong team skills
-Must possess a keen interest in learning new tools & processes
-Proven co-ordination/ leadership skills.
-Ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing, in Chinese and
English.
-Experience using one or more translation memory tools, preferably including
Trados.
-Quality focused.

send a letter back to you after accepting the announcements that asks for
