Subject:  Proficiency Tests

Dear Colleagues,


We are now trying to design a proficiency test in the Indonesian
language. The tests is meant to measure people's abilities in general
languge use. We would be grateful if you could tell us recent studies
about TOEFL or other English proficiency tests. Could you also let us
know the e-mail addresses by which we can make contacts with
institutions developing the standardized tests like TOEFL?

Subject:  Madame la ministre

Hello,

I just found out from news articles on the internet that the Acadmie
franaise apparently decided in December 1998 that the word "ministre"
is masculine in French and that it should never be used in the
feminine (except in informal settings and never in writing), thereby
denying (or trying to deny) female ministers in France the right to be
addressed as "Madame la ministre".  I haven't been able to find
anything, though, about the reactions that this decision has triggered
in France and in other francophone countries.  Could anyone confirm
this report and tell me what the reactions have been?  I'll be happy
to post or send anyone who's interested a summary of the responses.

Subject:  Grammatical Gender

Some years ago I finished my M.A. thesis on the assignment of
grammatical gender of loan-words borrowed from English in Maltese.  I
am now doing research work on the acquisition of grammatical gender
in children focusing on monolingual Maltese speakers and bilingual
Maltese/English speakers.  I would appreciate any help on this topic.
