Subject:  Syntax, Semantics; Visiting Asst Profs at Northwestern


The Department of Linguistics at Northwestern University announces two
full-time, temporary Visiting Assistant Professorships for the 1999-2000
academic year (mid-September 1999 to mid-June 2000):

     The area of specialization for position #1 is SYNTAX with
     preference given to candidates with secondary interests in a
     related field (e.g., Morphology, Semantics, Computational
     Linguistics, Psycholinguistics).  This position is for one
     year and is non-renewable.

     The area of specialization for position #2 is SEMANTICS with
     preference given to candidates with secondary interests in a
     related field (e.g., Syntax, Computational Linguistics,
     Psycholinguistics).  This position is for one year, renewable
     for a second year, and is contingent on available funding.

Candidates for both positions must have received their Ph.D. by
September 1, 1999. The annual teaching load will be five
undergraduate/graduate courses spread over three academic quarters.
Salary will depend on qualifications and experience.  Preference will be
given to candidates with a strong teaching record and interdisciplinary
research interests that mesh with those of the current faculty.

**APPLICATIONS ARE DUE AT NORTHWESTERN BY APRIL 2, 1999.** The
application should include the candidate's CV (indicating an e-mail
address), statements of research and teaching interests, teaching
evaluations (if available), and publications/reprints or other written
work.  Candidates should arrange to have 3-4 letters of reference sent
directly to the search committee by the application deadline; one of the
letters should specifically address the applicant's qualifications as a
teacher.
