INSTRUCTOR IN AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE
Position Number 86561V
Kapi'olani Community College, variable FTE ranging from 50% FTE to
full-time contingent on course offerings and student demand;
non-tenure-track, 9-month contract, general funds, to begin
approximately 8/01, pending position clearance, availability of funds,
and actual staffing requirements.

Duties:
Under general supervision, teach transfer-level ASL classes and related
non-credit ASL, Deaf Culture, and Interpreting classes; teach in the
pre-college program for Deaf/Hard-of-hearing students; assist in
developing Deaf Studies program and curriculum in coordination with the
ASL/Interpreter Education Program Coordinator and Gallaudet University
Regional Center Director; articulate instructional objectives in terms
of competencies and, where appropriate, develop and use multi-media
resources, including computing and computer-mediated communication, as
part of instructional strategies.  Related activities include, but are
not limited to, maintaining at least one hour per week for each course
taught; counseling students; preparing and revising course materials,
objectives and syllabi; maintaining an approved program of professional
self-improvement; collecting data and preparing reports; independently
planning, organizing and carrying out instructional and
non-instructional (including committee) duties as assigned.  Evening
classes may be assigned as part of regular workload.  Duties and
responsibilities may include instructional assignments involving
distance education.

Minimum Qualifications:
(1) Functionally native fluency in ASL (ASL Proficiency Interview Level
4 or 5), (2) training/education in ASL teaching methodology (i.e. ASLTA
[American Sign Language Teachers Association], SIGN [Sign Language
Guidance Network], Signing Naturally Teachers Training), AND (3)
Master's degree in ASL, ASL Studies, literature, linguistics;
Linguistics; Teaching ASL; Deaf Studies; Signed Communication; Deaf
Education; ESL; or related field (Special Education, Foreign Language
Instruction, Interpreting) or (4) Bachelors degree in ASL, ASL Studies,
literature, linguistics; Linguistics; Teaching ASL; Deaf Studies; Signed
Communication; Deaf Education; Education; ESL; or related field (Special
Education, Foreign Languages, Foreign Language Instruction,
Interpreting) with 3 years post-degree related work experience and the
ability to communicate in written English.

Desirable Qualifications:
Successful experience (as substantiated by student and peer assessments)
teaching Deaf students at the high school or college level; experience
working as an interpreter or working with interpreters; familiarity with
the use of computers, especially the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, Page
Maker and the Internet; experience in grant writing; experience
developing program curricula; familiarity with distance education;
evidence of ability to work in a collegial manner with peers,
coordinators, department chairs, and administrators.

Pay Range: C-2, $2669 minimum monthly.

Vacancy for an Associate Professor at Utrecht University, The Netherlands

Utrecht University invites senior researchers to apply for an associate
professorship in text linguistics, text processing and discourse analysis.
If you are interested in innovative work and leadership of an
interdisciplinary group of researchers in communication and linguistics you
will find this an excellent opportunity.

We will consider both full-time and part-time candidates.

The research you will participate in is organised in the  Utrecht Institute
of Linguistics OTS and the teaching in the department for Dutch Language
and Literature. The research institute is strongly committed to academic
excellence and is involved in many national and international research
activities. The invited associate professor will participate (40 %of the
workload) in research concentrating on the study of language use and
communication. He or she will also join the department for Dutch Language
linguistics, text processing and discourse analysis. The teaching load is
60% of the total work load.

Her/his responsibilities will  include:

- research in his/her own topic;
- acquisition of funds for new research projects;
- coordination and innovation of education and research in the discipline;
- teaching of students on all levels (undergraduate, graduate, Ph.D.);
- writing and publishing papers, articles, books;
- management in educational settings and in research.

We require of the applicant that she/he

- has a Ph.D. in linguistics or another relevant discipline;
- has previous teaching experience in the discipline;
- has shown to be a competent manager;
- has shown to be creative in teaching and in research from an
interdisciplinary perspective;
- is prepared to learn Dutch within two years;
