The Foreign Language Center of Mokpo National University, South Korea,
has five posts opening for ESL/EFL teachers, starting July 1999.

Mokpo National University, founded in 1946, is located in Mokpo and
Muan, the southwest part of South Korea, and has some 7,000 students.
The Foreign Language Center offers a variety of conversational English
courses at beginning and intermediate levels.

CONTRACT PERIOD
The contract period is for one year, from July 1, 1999 to June 30, 2000.
Contract may be renewed upon the agreement of both parties.

DUTIES
There are 20 teaching hours per week, Monday through Friday.  Overtime
hours may be allocated at the discretion of the director of the Foreign
Language Center.  These will be compensated at standard overtime rate.

QUALIFICATIONS
M.A. degree required, preferably in EFL/ESL.  Two or more years'
teaching experience preferred but not necessary.

SALARY AND BENEFITS
1,800,000 won (approximately 1,500 U.S. dollars) per month.  Return air
fare (up to 1,000,000 won) and a bonus equivalent to one month's salary
will be paid upon successful completion of the contract.  Benefits
include subsidized Korean Health Insurance, an office with a personal
computer, guaranteed six weeks' paid vacation and a furnished apartment.

In spite of Korea's current economic problems, the university salary is
sufficient to sustain a comfortable life as well as permit travel around
Asia.

SENIOR ACOUSTIC MODELING ENGINEER
GERMANIC LANGUAGES

TASK:
The engineer will work in the domain of acoustic-phonetic
modeling for the international versions of the L&H
Voice Xpress dictation product line.
He/she will be part of a language development team for
Germanic Languages in Europe that covers British English,
Dutch and German.
As part of this team, he/she will be responsible for
building acoustic-phonetic models, combining and tuning
of the building blocks that make up a dictation system,
based on tools and procedures created in other groups.
He or she will work closely together with acoustic data
collection people and with language modeling engineers
and will report to the modeling team leader for
Germanic languages.

PROFILE:
- We are looking for persons with a degree in engineering,
mathematics or computer science who have experience in
acoustic/phonetic modeling.
- Knowledge of linguistics, especially in the field of
phonetics and phonology, is highly valued.
- Familiarity with English is required, a good command of
German is an asset.
- Programming skills: user experience with UNIX and in-depth
knowledge of a programming language required. Experience
in C, C++, Perl or other scripting languages is an asset.
- Experience in the field of computer linguistics is an asset.
Knowledge of speech recognition techniques such as HMM,
signal processing, statistical modeling techniques is
highly appreciated.
- Good communication skills are required.
- The candidate is a team player but can also work also
independently.
- The candidate has sense for methodology and self organization
and works rigorously.
- Willing to work in Brussels and travel for short periods.
