Yuko Yoshida
Pitch Accent Phenomena in Standard Japanese
This thesis contains three major proposals. First, the work as a whole
is devoted to expansion of the notion of phonological licensing domain
from the domain of a syllabic constituent and a combination of
constituents (Kaye, Lowenstamm and Vergnaud 1990) to that of a word,
and to that of various types of phrases. The second claim relates to
the formalisation of accent assignment in Standard Japanese, based on
binary right-headed licensing between nuclei. The second point leads
directly to the third issue, the clarification of prosodic typology:
tone languages vs. stress/pitch accent languages.
Contents
1. Licensing in phonology 2. Previous treatments of pitch accent in
Japanese 3. Phonological licensing and high pitch assignment 4.
