City University of Hong Kong is a well-established degree-granting
institution in Hong Kong directly funded by the Government of the Hong
Kong Special Administrative Region through the University Grants
Committee.  It has embarked on an ambitious strategic plan to become
one of the leading universities in the Asia-Pacific region by
achieving excellence in teaching and research.  The student population
for 1998-99 is approximately 18,500.  The medium of instruction is
English.

Currently, there are seventeen academic departments grouped under
three Faculties - Faculty of Business, Faculty of Humanities and
Social Sciences, and Faculty of Science and Engineering - each being
responsible for a full range of research degree, postgraduate and
undergraduate degrees programmes.

Applications are invited for the following concurrent headship
appointment tenable from 1 August 1999:

Head of Department of English [Ref. D/396/99B]

The Department of English is one of the four departments in the
Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.  It is unique in the region
for its range of teaching and research activities, including English
Language Teaching, Language Teacher Education, Discourse Studies,
Professional Communication, Literature, Mass Communication and New
Media Studies.  Undergraduate programmes are offered in Teaching
English as a Second Language and English for Professional
Communication and taught postgraduate programmes are offered in
Teaching English as a Second Language, Communication and New Media,
and English for Specific Purposes.  The faculty comes from an
international and multidisciplinary background.  Many of them are
involved with the recently established English Language Education and
Communication Research Centre or the Mass Media and Public Opinion in
Greater China strategic development area.

The University also accepts nominations and reserves the right not to
fill the position.

Qualifications for Appointment

The Head of Department will be expected to provide strong academic
leadership in the development of the teaching and research in the
Department.  Candidates should possess strong academic and
professional qualifications in one or more of the Department's
teaching and research areas, substantial relevant experience in
tertiary education and a successful record of research and
scholarship.  Candidates will also be required to demonstrate ability
to give academic and managerial leadership in the Department.

Salary and Conditions of Service

The successful candidate is expected to be appointed at the
professorial level on superannuable terms with provision for
retirement benefits, or on fixed-term contract with contract-end
gratuity.  Salary will be competitive and be commensurate with the
appointee's qualifications and experience.  Concurrently, the
appointee will be offered the headship appointment for an initial term
of three years.  Generous fringe benefits include 46 days' annual
leave, housing, passage allowance and medical and dental care
provision.

2 RESEARCH POSITIONS: NATURAL LANGUAGE PROCESSING and DISCOURSE ANALYSIS

		Closing date:  1 June 1999

The Tutorial Dialogue Project is aimed at studying human tutorial
dialogues in order to inform the construction of computer-based tutors
that can participate in effective tutorial interactions with their
users.  The project is using analysis of a corpus of tutorial
dialogues, psycholinguistic experimentation, and WOZ studies to inform
the design and implementation of an intelligent dialogue-based
tutoring system.  We seek two individuals to help with development of
the dialogue manager and the generation component.


		Research Position in Natural Language Processing

The ideal candidate will hold a degree in Computational Linguistics,
Artificial Intelligence, or Computer Science and have in interest both
in natural language processing and intelligent tutoring.  S/he will
have practical experience in developing robust language interfaces
both on the algorithmic level and on the knowledge construction level.
Programming or development expertise in Lisp, C or C++ is essential,
and experience with Perl is highly desirable.  Candidates with an
interest in discourse planning, dialogue management, and/or the
practical aspects of natural language generation are particularly

		Research Position in Discourse Analysis

The ideal candidate will hold a degree in Computational Linguistics,
Linguistics, or Artificial Intelligence and have in interest both in
linguistic analysis and educational applications of technology.  S/he will
have practical experience in developing discourse tagging schemes, analysing
discourse data, and/or performing empirical analyses of human tutoring.
Should have experience with statistical analysis using Excel, SPSS, or other
statistical analysis software.  Experience with markup languages such
as XML or SGML is also desirable. (Please quote ref: 776268)

Successful candidates will be hired on the AR1A researcher scale
(15,735-23,651 pounds per annum), depending on age and experience.
The post is initially for a period of two years, starting as soon as
possible.
