PhD FELLOWSHIPS IN NEW ZEALAND LEXICOGRAPHY

The New Zealand Dictionary Centre at Victoria University of Wellington
invites applications for two PhD fellowships in New Zealand lexicography.
Each fellowship is for full-time research and will provide the holder with
research facilities and $15000 per year for up to three years. Applicants
should have a good Masters or Honours degree (or anticipate completing a
postgraduate degree before the end of 1999), and have a strong interest in
adding to our knowledge of the words used distinctively in New Zealand. The
Centre is especially interested to receive applications from persons with a
background in one or more of the following fields: English language and
literature, linguistics, Maori language, or New Zealand history.

Each successful applicant will work with the director of the Centre to
establish a programme of research leading to a PhD thesis on a particular
lexicographical aspect of language in New Zealand. On New Zealand English,
for example, there are opportunities to undertake research on such topics
as the language used in domestic contexts, and by such diverse groups as
early missionaries, goldminers, farmers, soldiers, parliamentarians,
adolescents, and different sports, professions and trades. On Maori
language there is scope for research on differences between iwi as well as
extending the size of the current databases on the language.

The New Zealand Dictionary Centre has substantial reference resources of
its own and large computerized databases of New Zealand English based on
over 40 years of data collection undertaken by Dr Harry Orsman, from which
his award-winning Dictionary of New Zealand English was compiled. In
addition, there are major research resources in Wellington, including those
held by the National Library, the Turnbull Library, the National Archives,
and many records of government and other agencies. The Centre also has
access to major lexicographical resources such as those held in Oxford for
the Oxford English Dictionary, and by the Australian National Dictionary
Centre.

Applications for the Fellowships close on 30 June, 1999. Applications
should include a CV and academic records as well as a research proposal or
outline of research interests in New Zealand lexicography, and the names of
three referees who may be contacted. For further information please get in
touch with Professor Graeme Kennedy, Director, New Zealand Dictionary
Centre, Victoria University of Wellington, PO Box 600, Wellington 6005. New
Zealand.
