SECOND LANGUAGES AND CULTURES EDUCATION

The Department of Curriculum and Instruction, College of Education and
Human Development, University of Minnesota, invites nominations and
applications for the position of Assistant Professor, Second Languages
and
Cultures Education. This is a full-time, tenure-track position in a
highly
regarded college of a major urban research university starting Fall
Semester 1999.  Additional information about the college or department

The individual in this position will join a strong second languages and
cultures education program in the Department of Curriculum and
Instruction
and will contribute to collaborative efforts with faculty in other parts
of
the college and University.

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Teaching and advisement: Teach and advise students in second languages
and
cultures licensure and graduate programs, which provide for
postbaccalaureate teacher development and graduate study at the M.Ed.,
M.A., and Ph.D. levels.  Contribute to the coordination of clinical
experiences with cooperating teachers, schools, and districts.  Provide
outreach courses to practitioners in local public and private schools.
Research:  Develop and maintain a strong record of basic and applied
scholarship pertinent to the core specialization of this position, while

maintaining a commitment to securing external funds to support the
individual's scholarly inquiry and to support collaborative projects.
Service:  Participate in college, University, and community service and
other outreach activities, including serving on committees or task
forces,
and making inservice presentations to community constituents, etc.
Participate in the activities of relevant professional organizations.

Desired Background and Experience:
Minimum Qualifications:
*An earned doctorate in education, with an emphasis in second
languages
and cultures education or a closely related field. Applications from ABD

candidates will be considered, provided the individual is on track to
complete the doctorate before the start date for this position. If the
successful candidate does not have a conferred doctorate by then, he or
she
will be appointed as a Teaching Specialist until the degree is
conferred.
*Teaching experience in a K-12 setting in the United States.
*Experience with teacher development and supervision
*Excellence (or the potential for excellence) in scholarship and
publications, teaching and academic program development at the graduate
level, and service/outreach activities
*Background and experience in English as a second language and foreign

language education.
*Knowledge of the educational needs of diverse linguistic and cultural

groups in the United States.
Preferred Qualifications:
*Significant interest in preservice teacher development.
*Evidence of a commitment to teaching and research and to working with

schools.
*Background and experience in an additional area of language
education,
e.g., bilingual education or immersion education.

Appointment Details: The individual hired will be appointed into a
full-time, 9-month position August 28, 2000, as a tenure-track Assistant

Professor.  Summer and May-term employment is a possibility but is not
guaranteed.  Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience.
