Subject:  Korean Computational Linguistics: NLP Group in Microsoft Korea

	COMPUTATIONAL LINGUIST FOR KOREAN

	The NLP Group in Microsoft Korea is looking for a computational
linguist for Korean critique writing.  The position will be located at the
Microsoft Research & Development in Seoul, Korea.  This is a great
opportunity to work with a dedicated group of people who are developing a
Korean system for unrestricted text understanding and generation .

	RESPONSIBILITIES:

	The primary responsibility will be designing and writing critique
rules and a spec for a grammar checker.  The rules are based on the output
of our Korean language parser, so the critique rule writer will become
intimately familiar with the Microsoft natural language system, and will
then enhance the system by creating rules to flag grammatical errors and
suggest alternatives.

	QUALIFICATIONS:

	The computational linguist!/s qualifications should include
experience in linguistic research, programming experience, keen interest in
grammar issues, and an advanced degree in linguistics or a closely related
discipline.  Native proficiency in Korean is assumed.  A practical
orientation is highly desirable.  Significant programming experience would
be a plus.

	ABOUT THE MICROSOFT NLP GROUP IN KOREA:

	We are in the process of building a Korean system to analyze
unrestricted natural language, taking input text, and moving from
lexical/morphological analysis through syntax, semantics, and eventually
pragmatics and discourse. A generation component is also planned.  The
system was designed and created by the NLP group in Microsoft Research in
Redmond, Washington, USA, with which we are working closely.   We are
empirically oriented, and are happy to use good linguistic ideas wherever
they can be found.  A reasonable first-version summary of our techniques
and some of our experience can be found in the book "Natural Language
Processing: The PLNLP Approach,"  Kluwer Academic Publishers, Boston, 1993.

The Department of Modern Languages & Literatures of The University of
the West Indies, Mona, requires a Lecturer / Senior Lecturer qualified
to teach Spanish Language up to Year 3 of the B.A. Programme (3 year
programme). Native or near-native speaker competence is desirable in
applicants for this post. Experience in the area of translating would
also be an asset. Ideally the candidate should have a Ph.D but we are
willing to consider competent applicants with an M.A.
