The Department of English at the University of Alabama invites
applications for two tenure-track assistant professor positions
starting in August of 2000, for linguists who can participate in our
established M.A.-TESOL Program, our new Ph.D. concentration in applied
linguistics (discourse, culture and English language studies), and who
can also offer undergraduate linguistics courses (in particular, an
introduction to linguistics and a history of English).

Duties include teaching, research, and service; our M.A.-TESOL faculty
work closely with our colleagues in UA's English Language Institute.

A Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics/Linguistics is required, with strengths
in some combination from the areas of second language writing,
classroom-oriented research, language teaching methodology, second
language acquisition theory, and socio-historical approaches to the
history of English. For one of the positions, preference will be
given to candidates with strengths in the area of second language
writing, and an interest in working with our faculty in rhetoric and
composition. For the other position, preference will be given to
candidates with strengths in the structure and history of the English
language. Preference will be given for both positions to candidates
who see research opportunities in (1) our large freshman composition
program with separate sections for non-native English speakers, (2)
UA's independently-administered intensive English Language Institute
with a large internal program and a number of external programs each
year, and (3) UA's well-developed self-instructional language program
(Critical Languages). Competence in at least one other language and
international teaching experience are highly desirable.

Send letter of application, c.v., names of three references, and any
representative publications to:

Prof. Catherine E. Davies,
Director of the M.A.-TESOL Program,
Dept. of English,
Box 870244
University of Alabama
Tuscaloosa, AL 35487-0244

Search will remain open until position is filled; however, review of
applications will begin immediately. Interviews will be held at the
MLA. The University of Alabama is an Affirmative Action/Equal
Opportunity Employer.
