CALL FOR PAPERS

Invitation to contribute on the panel:

De-stereotyping intercultural discourse
Panel for the 7th International Pragmatic Conference, Budapest 9-14 July
2000

Ethnocentric judgements, images and categorisations in intercultural
discourse have been extensively studied over the last decennia. These
analyses have documented many discourse strategies aimed at
categorising, discriminating and excluding members of different cultural
and ethnic groups in interaction.
On the basis of these research studies and the growing disapproval of
discrimination in society various anti-discrimination - and anti-racist
programs have been developed and implemented. Nowadays, interactors may
know better how to deal with their stereotypes towards other cultures,
how to cope with alien or unknown discourse structures and interaction
patterns and, finally, how to build a common ground ('discursive
interculture' cf. Koole / ten Thije 1994) as the basis for their
intercultural discourse.
This panel aims to bring together researchers, who report empirical
analyses, based on recorded data, talk at work or institutional
discourse, in which processes of 'de-stereotyping' can be documented in
interaction. The panel discussion focuses on the analyses of the
discourse structures and processes in which interactors show how they
(1) constrain the validity of their knowledge with respect to other
cultures and (2) interactively modify the (ethnocentric) judgements of
other interactors, by means of, for instance, explicitly thematising
culturally different interaction patterns or perspectivising cultural
differences.
