JOB ANNOUNCMENT


The Department of Linguistics at Oakland University invites
applications for a tenure track assistant professor, appointment
effective August 15, 2000.  We are seeking a theoretical linguist with
a broad range of interests and a specialization in some ancillary area
such as L1/L2 acquisition theory, sociolinguistics, or
neurolinguistics.  The appointee will be expected to teach courses and
maintain an active research program in her or his area of
specialization, as well as teach additional courses in the core areas
of linguistics. The position requires a Ph.D in Linguistics, a strong
theoretical background, and a commitment to research and
teaching. Curriculum vitae, samples of work and three letters of
reference should be sent to: Peter J. Binkert, Chair, Department of
Linguistics, Oakland University, Rochester, MI 48309-4401. Preliminary
interviews with members of the search committee will be held at the
LSA meeting in Chicago, January 6-9, 2000; candidates who plan on
attending the meeting should submit their applications by December 1
so that interviews can be arranged; those unable to attend are still
encouraged to apply. All applications received by January 15, 2000

Job Announcement

MRM, Inc., a language research firm in the Washington, D.C. area, is
seeking a linguist to compile a Cantonese-English dictionary.  The ideal
candidate is a native speaker of English who has near-native skills in
Cantonese.  A Ph.D. in linguistics is preferred, but candidates with
equivalent academic training or work experience will be given serious
consideration.  Knowledge of multi-lingual computing is a plus.
