FOURTH WORKSHOP ON THE SEMANTICS AND PRAGMATICS OF DIALOGUE
Gvteborg University, Sweden
June 15-17 2000

Gvtalog 2000 will be the fourth in a series of workshops that aim at
bringing together researchers working on the semantics and pragmatics
of dialogues in fields such as artificial intelligence, formal
semantics and pragmatics, computational linguistics, and
psychology.
We invite abstracts on all topics related to the semantics and
pragmatics of dialogues, including, but not limited to:
- common ground in communication
- semantic interpretation in dialogues
- modelling agents' information states and how they get updated
- multi-agent models
- reference in dialogues
- reasoning in spoken dialogue systems
SUBMISSION PROCEDURE:
Authors should submit an anonymous extended abstract of at most 5
single-column pages (for talks with a duration of 30' plus 10'
discussion) together with a separate page specifying the authors'
names, affiliation, address, and e-mail address. The abstracts should
be submitted electronically (in postscript, html, ascii, or pdf
format) to: gotalog at cogsci.ed.ac.uk.
IMPORTANT DATES:
Papers due: February 15th
Acceptance notice: April 15th
Final version due: May 22
Conference: June 15-17th

Stuttgart, Germany), Ian Lewin (SRI, UK), Diane Litman (AT&T, USA),
Johanna Moore (U Edinburgh, UK), Hannes Rieser (U Bielefeld, Germany),
David Sadek (CNET, France), Len Schubert (U Rochester, USA), and Henk
Zeevat (U Amsterdam, Netherlands).
ORGANIZATION:
This year's workshop is organized in collaboration with the
EU-sponsored project TRINDI
( http://www.ling.gu.se/research/projects/trindi/ ).
The workshop will take place at Gvteborg University. The local
conference chair is Robin Cooper.

The Symposium About Language and Society-Austin is pleased to announce
its Eighth Annual Meeting to be held April 7 - 9, 2000 at the
University of Texas at Austin. We encourage the submission of
abstracts on research that addresses the relationship of language to
culture and society. Desired frameworks include but are not limited
to:
LINGUISTIC ANTHROPOLOGY
SOCIOLINGUISTICS
ETHNOGRAPHY OF COMMUNICATION
SPEECH PLAY, VERBAL ART, AND POETICS
POLITICAL ECONOMY OF LANGUAGE
LANGUAGE AND SOCIAL INTERACTION
DISCOURSE ANALYSIS
2000 KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

Madeline Maxwell, University of Texas at Austin
Gillian Sankoff, University of Pennsylvania
Selected papers delivered at the conference will be published as a
special edition of the Texas Linguistic Forum. Speakers will be
allowed 20 minutes for presentation and 10 minutes for discussion.
Papers will be selected based on the evaluation of an anonymous
written abstract which may not exceed one page (using 10 pt. font or
larger).
Please submit:
1) six (6) copies of the abstract, on 81/2 x 11 paper, to the address below.
2) a 3x5 card with the following information:
a) The title of the paper
b) Author's name
c) Author's affiliation
d) Address, phone number, and email address at which the author wishes to
be notified.
3) a short 100 word abstract, on a 3.5" disk (Mac or PC), for publication
in the conference program. Texts must be word-processed in text-only ASCII
or Microsoft Word (Mac or PC). Please label your disk clearly.

Deadline for receipt of abstracts is January 18, 2000. Late
submissions will not be accepted, and we cannot accept papers which
are to be published elsewhere. Notification of acceptance or
rejection will be sent in mid-February, 2000. Pre-registration fees
(until April 6) will be $22 for students and $37 for non-students.
April 7-9 the fees will be $25 for students and $40 for non-students.
Papers must be received by early June 2000 to be included in the
published proceedings.
