QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. by August 1, 2000 in TESOL, Applied Linguistics,
English or closely related area with specialization in an area of TESOL
or
SLA. Minor in one or more of the following areas: highly desirable:
Composition and Rhetoric, Technical or Professional Writing, Modern
Literature, Humanities/Great Books, or Film and Literature.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Teach graduate courses in TESOL and courses in

A linguistic analyst position is available at MNIS TextWise Labs,
located in Syracuse, N.Y. TextWise conducts research and development
of natural language processing software for information access and
analytics. The analyst's responsibilities will be to maintain and
improve linguistic representations for use in information retrieval
and extraction applications. Tasks include analysis of text for
linguistic patterns, the positing of rules and heuristics to extract
those patterns, and the testing and validation of the rules. Analysts
should enjoy working with text and be computer literate (PC or Unix).
Candidates should have diverse linguistic interests, including syntax,
semantics and discourse. Qualifications include experience in
linguistic research; a flexible approach to linguistic theory; working
knowledge of a second language; and a degree in linguistics or a
closely related discipline. Practical experience with, or interest in,
natural language processing is assumed. TextWise is an equal
