Following are announcements for two openings at the University of New
Mexico, Department of Linguistics, Signed Language Interpreting Program.


OPENING #1	

The Department of Linguistics at the University of New Mexico announces an
opening for the position of Assistant Professor to commence in August
2000, pending budget capability.  The primary responsibility for this
tenure-track position is to teach courses in the Signed Language
Interpreting Program, with a secondary possibility of teaching
undergraduate and graduate courses in Linguistics.

Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. in Linguistics or closely related field by
August 2000.  Experience teaching courses in signed language
interpretation; a program of research related to ASL linguistics or signed
language interpretation

Desirable Qualifications: Ability to work effectively with students and
colleagues; ability to teach other courses in the Signed Language
Interpreting Program, such as Deaf Culture; ability and desire to work
with program faculty in developing a state-of-the art program in
interpreter education and ASL instruction; research and teaching goals
compatible with the cognitive/functionalist perspective on the Department
of Linguistics; RID certification or the equivalent.

OPENING #2

The Department of Linguistics at the University of New Mexico announces an
opening for the position of Lecturer to commence in August 2000, pending
budget capability.  The main responsibility for this full-time, permanent
position is to teach undergraduate courses in American Sign Language
(ASL).

Minimum Qualifications: Master's Degree; native or native-like ASL skills;
bicultural with experience in interacting comfortably in both the Deaf and
hearing communities; and experience teaching ASL.

Desirable Qualifications: Significant graduate-level education in
Linguistics, ASL Instruction, Deaf Studies or related fields.  Ability to
teach other courses in the Interpreter Education Program, such as Deaf
Culture; ability to work effectively with students and colleagues; ability
and desire to work with program faculty in developing a state-of-the-art
program in interpreter education and ASL instruction.
