non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobnet.html.

This page has been set up so that people can report on the employment

Post-doctoral fellowships in Developmental Phonetics are now available at
the Biocommunication Research Laboratory

The BRL is located in a large urban medical center in Birmingham,
Alabama. The behavioral research conducted at the BRL, which is
supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health, focuses on
changes across the life span in the ability to learn speech and
language. All four current projects examine the naturalistic
acquisition of English as a second language (L2) in North America. One
project is a 7-year longitudinal study which is now in its 2nd
year. This project examines native Spanish adults. Another project
examines English phonology and morphosyntax acquisition by Korean
adults and children. These subjects are being tested at two times
separated by one year. A similar project examines Japanese adults and
children. We have been examining Italian/English bilinguals in Canada
since 1992 in collaboration with Prof. Ian MacKay at the University of
Ottawa. These subjects are selected on the basis of age of arrival in
Canada and amount of Italian (L1) use. We have examined overall degree
of foreign accent, vowel perception and production, consonant
perception, and word recognition in English. Other work in progress
examines performance in Italian (the L1).

Qualifications:

The post-doctoral fellows will participate in one or more of the
projects just mentioned. We seek candidates who have recently
completed a Ph.D. (or have equivalent experience) in a relevant
discipline such as Developmental or Cognitive Psychology, Experimental
Phonetics, or Clinical Linguistics. Knowledge of Italian, Spanish,
Korean, or Japanese is desirable. Candidates should have a strong
background in experimental design and statistics; have carried out
behavioral research with human subjects; have knowledge of speech
production and perception, as well as speech acoustics; have an
interest in speech and language development; and speak and write
English well. Prior publications are desirable, but not required.

Compensation:

The salary is $27,000-$35,000 USD, depending on previous relevant
experience. The appointment will be for one year, with the possibility
of renewals for up to four additional years. U.S. or Canadian
citizenship is preferred, but not required. Work outside Alabama
(e.g., in Ottawa) may be required. Health insurance is provided, as
well as one trip to a professional conference per year.

Inquiries:

If interested, please send a recent CV, sample publications, and the
names of three referees to;
J.E. Flege (E-mail: jeflege at uab.edu;
