Teaching assistantship in Linguistics

Linguistics at the University of Sussex (Brighton, UK) will have
available from October 2000 at least one teaching assistantship. The
successful candidate(s) will register for a doctorate (or in
exceptional circumstances an MPhil) on any topic that is within the
expertise of the faculty.

The value of the award, which will run for three years, will be 7200
pounds (to cover maintenance, at rates applying for entry in 2000),
plus tuition fees at the home/EU rate, for each year.

The successful candidate(s) will be given appropriate instruction in
teaching and related activities, and will be expected to contribute
up to 6 hours per week during academic terms. They may be expected to
do marking and other forms of testing.

Among the research strengths of the Linguistics faculty are historical
linguistics, language change, philology, onomastics, morphology,
syntactic theory, typology, descriptive linguistics, lexical semantics,
sociolinguistics, language and gender, English dialects, the language
of racial and sexual categorization, Hausa, Catalan and Basque.
