Call for Participation

One-day Workshop on Interactive Searching in Foreign-Language Collections
Human-Computer Interaction Lab, University of Maryland, College Park

The workshop will explore technology to allow users that know one
language to interactively search large collections of text (or speech)
that is expressed in another language.  The workshop is open, and the
content will depend in part on the interests of the participants.  We
are presently planning three sessions:

o State of the Art Presentations - what we know how to build, with demos.
o User Needs panel - what should we be building?
o Evaluation panel - how will we know if we did it right?

Presenters and panelists will be selected on the basis of 1-2 page
statements of interest submitted to the email address below by May 1,
2000.  Registration will be limited to 25 participants, so interested
parties are encouraged to submit a statement of interest in advance
even if they don't desire to present.

CALL FOR PAPERS: ISSUES IN APPLIED LINGUISTICS


    Issues in Applied Linguistics (ial) is currently accepting manuscripts
for review for the December 2000 general issue. While ial had originally
planned a special themed issue for this issue, due to unforeseen
circumstances the journal will now instead be publishing a general issue.
ial will accept manuscripts through May 15th, 2000.

    ial is a refereed scholarly journal published by the graduate students
of the UCLA Department of Applied Linguistics & TESL. Our aim is to publish
outstanding research from students, faculty, and independent researchers in
areas such as, but not limited to: Discourse analysis, Sociolinguistics,
Language acquisition, Language assessment, Language education, Language use,
Language and the Brain, Functional Grammar, Conversation Analysis and
Research methodology. We are particularly interested in publishing new
departures and cross-disciplinary applied linguistic research.

Submissions, should be submitted in three copies and sent to:

    Manuscripts should be printed double spaced (including the references,
examples, etc.) on one side only of white 8 1/2 x 11 or A4 paper, with black
printing ink. Figures and tables should be camera ready, numbered,
captioned, and printed on separate sheets. Please attach a separate cover
sheet with the following information:

The full title of your paper
Your name
Name and address of your institution (or other address where you can best be
reached)
Your phone number (work and home)
Fax number and e-mail address (if any)
Short title of your paper (for running head)
Indicate which issue manuscript is being submitted for
The first page must also include an abstract of the article which is less
than 150 words. Aside from the cover sheet, the author's name should not
appear on the manuscript itself.

References should be made in the text and cited as follows: (Cazden, 1988,
p. 53), (Sinclair & Coulthard, 1975). A series of references should be
listed in chronological order: (Goodlad, 1984; Cazden, 1988; Lemke, 1991).
Use the letters a, b, c to distinguish citations of different works by the
same author in the same year. All references cited in the text must be
listed alphabetically and double-spaced following the notes and using APA
format (See journal for examples).
