The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobnet.html.

This page has been set up so that people can report on the employment
standards of various countries.

FULL-TIME INSTRUCTOR POSITIONS IN KOREA

If you are interested in teaching English at a large, national-caliber
university in Korea, Pusan National University (PNU), the most
prestigious university in the second largest city in Korea, is seeking
applicants to fill two positions for full-time instructor.

Below are the working conditions:

 Teaching duties begin on Sep 1, 2000.

 The contract is for one year, but it is renewable.

 The base salary is 1.5 million won per month, but with overtime
pay and other work, the total actual salary would be closer to 2 million
won per month. (The won/dollar exchange rate as of May 01, 1998 was
about 1,350 won = $1)

 The basic teaching load is 10 hours per week, but it could be
up to 20 hours. From the 11th hour of teaching per week, there is
overtime pay of 5,000 won per hour.

 PNU also houses the Language Education Institute (LEI), which
offers foreign language (e.g., English, Chinese, Japanese) instruction.
There are opportunities to teach in the institute, at a pay rate of
22,000 won per hour.

 Housing will be provided by PNU. We will provide you with the
Foreign Professor's Apartments or the Sang-Nam International House, on a
space available basis. If you choose accommodations at the Foreign
Professor's Apartments, you shall live in a one-person apartment, and
you shall pay utility fees for telephone, gas, and electricity. If you
choose Sang-Nam International House, you shall live in a two-instructor
shared room, and you shall pay utility fees for telephone, gas,
electricity, and water. However, you reserve the right to use the room
alone, on a space-available basis. In that case, you shall pay the
amount of 100,000 won per month of residence. In addition, you shall pay
the utility fees.

 Airfare for a one-way ticket from Korea to an instructor's
choice of destination will be provided at the end of a contract period.
This is for one time only. Airfare will be provided only at the end of
the final contract period (in cases of contract renewal).

Job Qualifications:
An M.A. in TESOL or closely related field preferred, but not required.
Two years or more of teaching experience.
English native-speaker.

The application deadline is May 31, 2000, but it may be extended if the
positions remain open. If you are interested in these positions, please
