Atlantic Provinces Linguistic Association Conference
(Association de linguistique des provinces atlantiques)
Université de Moncton
Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada
November 3 & 4, 2000

Conference Theme: Sociolinguistics and Teaching the First Language to
Speakers of Regional Varieties

Keynote Speaker: Walt Wolfram, North Carolina State University

We welcome proposals for papers on the Conference Theme and/or any
related topic in Linguistics, Sociolinguistics, and Education.

All presenters must be members of the Association.  The annual
membership fee of $25 may be paid at the conference.  The registration
fee for the conference is $30.

Please submit an abstract (150 words or less) with a title, your name
and affiliation (to appear in the conference program), and in a
separate section indicate the title of the paper, your name and
affiliation, your office phone number, your current mailing and
electronic addresses, your fax number, as well as the audiovisual
equipment that you will need for your presentation.  Papers are 30
minutes long (20 minutes for presentation plus 10 minutes for
discussion).

If you have already submitted a preliminary title, could you please
confirm that your title will be the same as in your preliminary
submission (and send your abstract) or submit a new title along with
your abstract.

The Fifth English in South East Asia Conference (5ESEA)

First Call for Papers

The Fifth English in South East Asia Conference (5ESEA)
will be held at Curtin University of Technology, Perth,
Western Australia, from 6-8 December 2000.

Previous ESEA conferences have been held at the National

Institute of Education, Singapore, the University of Malaya,
and the University of Brunei.


The theme for this year's conference is

"Communication, identity, power and education: roles and
functions of Englishes"

Confirmed keynote speakers:

* Robert Philippson, Roskilde University, Denmark and author
of 'Linguistic Imperialism'

* David Li, City University of Hong Kong

Abstracts (max 250 words)  for Papers (45 minutes) and outlines
for Workshops (90 minutes) are now invited. Deadline for receipt
of abstracts is 31 July.

Papers on these aspects of regional (Australasian/Asian) and
Aboriginal English(es) are particularly welcome.
