PhD Scholarship
New Zealand English
School of Linguistics and Applied Language Studies
Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand

Research into the nature and use of New Zealand English increases our
understanding of national identity and of language issues in the
community, and provides authentic resources for the NZ English
Curriculum.  The scholarship would be especially attractive to those
with a background in linguistics who are practising English teachers
and who wish to engage in research under the supervision of leading
researchers in the field.  Research topics might include aspects of
the accent, vocabulary, grammar or use of NZ English, the influence of
Maori on NZ English, gender issues in NZ English.  Recent research by
staff and students in the School of Linguistics and Applied Language
Studies includes studies of the vocabulary, syntax, sound system
(including acoustic analyses) and discourse feature of NZ English,
including aspects of Maori English.  The NZ Dictionary Centre, located
in the School, offers an opportunity to undertake research on the
vocabulary of NZ English.  The School has a staff of 24 with more than
50 graduate students currently engaged in thesis research in areas of
language description and language use, language learning and language
teaching.
