ORAGE 2001 is in straight line with the ORAGE' 98 conference - ORAlité
et GEstualité -

Its objective is to promote the importance of a multimodal approach in
the study of communication. The major theme of this meeting is the use
of voice and gestures in the management of interactive time and
space. The emergence of this set of topics and the increasing research
in gestural and vocal studies led to the foundation of the GeVoix
association which is organizing this conference with the Laboratoire
Parole et Langage (CNRS ESA 6057) at the Université de Provence.

Call for conference proposals

Teaching Academic Writing across Europe

First Conference of EATAW: The European Association for the Teaching of
Academic Writing

17-20 June 2001, Groningen, the Netherlands

Writing program administrators, writing centre staff, teachers,
researchers and students with an interest in the teaching of academic
writing are welcome to participate in this first EATAW conference. The
conference derives from some inspiring, successful and pleasantly
informal conferences that were first organized in Germany for members of
an emerging German network (Erfurt, 1997, Bochum, 1999). This network of
teachers and consultants in academic writing is now to be expanded on a
European level, through the establishment of EATAW and the organization
of the first EATAW conference.

The aim of EATAW, and of the conference, is to create a forum for
European colleagues and to support a European development in the
teaching of academic writing. The conference provides means for:
- connecting with people and institutions from all European Countries
and creating a network
- exchanging experiences from our work and 'best practice' examples from
teaching and tutoring methods and strategies, as well as their
theoretical and organizational frameworks (for example concerning
writing and teaching writing in different writing cultures)
- providing a venue for both teachers and researchers and bringing
participants up-to-date with the state of development of the field
The conference also contains the formal establishment of EATAW.

Conference themes:
- 'best practice'- examples (rationale, practice and material) of:
- teach-the-teachers initiatives
- writing tutoring and counselling practice
- general writing courses and subject-specific ones
- on-line teaching of writing and teaching writing with computers
- approaches to the teaching of (individual and co-operative) writing
and pedagogical strategies
- academic genres and subgenres, writing conventions, academic language,
writing cultures and intercultural aspects of (the teaching of) academic
writing
- writing and designing instructional material for the teaching of
academic writing
- program establishment (models, politics, strategies, faculty
development)
- researchers and therapists views on (for example):
- cognitive styles of writers and teaching/individual tutoring
- hypotheses on procrastination and blocking in academic writers

The program will include some keynote speakers as well as interactive
sessions to encourage participation and the exchange of ideas. The
organizing committee welcomes (proposals for) panel discussions and
round table sessions with (both):
- researchers and teachers discussing the relation between
theories/empirical findings and the practice of the teaching of writing,
or
- educational politicians, funding organizations and practitioners
discussing the financial, political and strategic possibilities for the
establishment of writing centres and writing programs in Europe.

Types of sessions:
- Workshops (90 minutes)
- Presentations (20 minutes + 10 minutes discussion)
- Panel discussions and roundtable sessions (60 minutes)

Guidelines for proposals:
Proposals are invited from writing program and writing centre staff,
teachers, scholars, writing tutors and counsellors, researchers, teacher
educators and curriculum specialists. Those wishing to propose a session
at the conference are requested to submit a one-page proposal to the
organising committee, stating:
1. who they are
2. their subject, approach, rationale and practice (with a focus on the
practice of their work, and with theoretical underpinnings where
possible)
3. the possible practical applicability of their contribution to the
teaching and tutoring of academic writing (contributions that put up
open questions and discussions are preferred above merely presentations
of practice)
4. the form of the contribution: workshop, presentation, panel
discussion or roundtable session

Deadline for sending in proposals (in English and by e-mail): October
30, 2000
Confirmation + provisional program will be issued in January 2001

Location and lodgings:
The conference is to be held at the Faculty of Arts at the heart of the
old centre of Groningen, where a variety of hotels will be available
within walking distance. The faculty of Arts is easily reached by public
transport (a 10 minutes walk from the train station).
