Subject: ICHL Workshop on subgrouping in Australian languages
Dear colleagues,
We are organising a workshop on subgrouping and reconstruction in
Australian languages, to be held during the 15th International Conference
on Historical Linguistics at La Trobe University, Melbourne, from 14th -
17th August, 2001. (For conference details see

Briefly, the aim of the workshop is to examine currently accepted
Australian subgroupings from as many parts of the country as is possible,
to see if the groupings are likely to be genetic (that is, the similarities
between the languages are the result innovation during a period of common
envolution) or whether they more likely reflect a local linguistic area.
Such a workshop will make publicly available the evidence that supports
each subgroup. Most of the subgroups/families presupposed for Australia
date to lexico-statistical groupings done in the late 1960s (such as
O'Grady, Wurm and Hale's 1965 classification); we would like to use the
occasion of a major historical linguistics conference in Australia to
examine these proposed subgrouping in detail. By the end of the workshop we
hope to have assembled a collection of papers which examine these
subgrouping proposals from the point of view of traditional historical
linguistics - that is, through reconstruction, detailed etymology and the
separation of common innovation from borrowing. We hope this will move
comparative linguistics in Australia towards demonstrating to what extent
it is possible to justify genetic subgrouping and the use of the
comparative method. A number of scholars have raised doubts as to the
application of these methods in Australia (particularly with regard to
Pama-Ngunyan), and we would like to use this opportunity to see to what
extent their doubts are justified.
If you would like to participate in this workshop, it would be helpful to
us if you could let us know by email (to bowern at fas.harvard.edu or
harold.koch at anu.edu.au) as soon as possible, but no later than **31st
January 2001**. Please also include your subgroup/languges you would be
presenting evidence for or against, and your contact details. We encourage
papers dealing with both Pama-Nyungan and non-Pama-Nyungan subgroups. A
copy of the guidelines for participants is available from
http://www.fas.harvard.edu/~bowern. Participation in this workshop does
not, of course, preclude you from submitting a paper to the main session.

6th ENGLISH APPLIED LINGUISTICS SEMINAR (VI ELIA)
THE DEVELOPMENT OF COMMUNICATIVE COMPETENCE: PAST,
PRESENT AND FUTURE
University of Seville, Spain (May 16-18, 2001)
The research group 'La lengua inglesa en el ambito
universitario' of the Department of English Philology
at the University of Seville (Spain) is organizing the
6th English Applied Linguistics Seminar (VI ELIA) to
be held in May 16-18, 2001. V ELIA ('Pragmatics:Theory
and Practice') took place in Seville on April 1999
with the participation as plenary speakers of Prof.
Deirdre Wilson (UCL) and Prof. Jenny Thomas
(University of Wales at Bangor), an an attendance of
over 40 researchers from areas such as Pragmatics,
Discourse Analysis, Language Learning & Acquisition,
Phonetics and
translation.
The topic of this year's seminar will be 'The
development of communicative competence: past, present
and future'. The presence of the following Keynote
speakers has already been confirmed:
Prof. Enrique Alcaraz (University of Alicante, Spain)
Prof. Guy Cook (University of Reading, UK)
Prof. Gabriele Kasoer (Univeristy of Hawaii, USA)
SUBMISSIONS: We invite submissions related but not
limited to the following topics: Second Language
Learning, Acquisition,Teaching; Pragmatics & Discourse
Analysis; Phonetics, and Translation.
Three kinds of submissions are proposed: papers (45
or 60 minutes, the last ten minutes will be devoted to
discussion) and workshops (60 minutes). Participants
should submit one-page abstract (500 words, Times 12)
and a step-by-step outline of the presentation. The
abstract should be accompanied by a cover letter
stating name, address, affiliation, email address,
phone and fax numbers. Electronic submissions (RTF,
ASCII, HTML) are highly encouraged and may sent to one
of the organizers; if you do not have email access you
can send 2 printed copies of your abstract and outline
to the address below.
DATES: The deadline for the submission of abstracts
and outlines to be considered for acceptance is
FEBRUARY 28, 2001.
Contributors will be notified of the refereeing
committee's decision by MARCH 31. Selected
contributions will be published in
the 4th issue of the series ELIA.

-Other attendants: 7.000 ptas (approx. Euro 42) until
April 16, 2001 & 9.000 ptas (approx. Euro 54) from
April 16, 2001
