workshop on

Phonetics-Phonology Interface: Palatalization
28 Ap r i l 2001

as part of the

 33rd Poznan Linguistic Meeting 27-29 April 2001

The aim of the workshop is to analyse palatalization from a
phonetic-phonological point of view. Contributors are invited to present
papers on topics which may include the following aspects:

1. Phonetic differences in the realisations of palatalization:
What articulatory/acoustic differences can be stated in the realisation
of a palatalised segment before i, j, e, and other segments? How does
their position (word-medial, word-final or across word-boundaries)
influence the palatalization?

2. Perceptual aspects:
What are the perceptual cues for different palatalization effects? How
do these cues reflect the segments triggering palatalization and the
position of the palatalized segments within a word?

3. Diachronic changes:
How do different natural classes behave (labials, coronals, velars) from
a diachronic point of view when they are palatalized?

4. Phonetic-phonology interface with respect to palatalization:
How do different phonetic results influence phonological treatment of
palatalization?

5. Representation of palatalization in phonology:
How should palatalization be adequately represented by means of features
and how does their arrangement look like? Does one representation
universally hold for palatalization in all languages?

6. Typology of palatalization:
What kind of typological generalisations (e.g. implications) can be
made with respect to palatalization?

Papers will be 30 minutes, followed by 15 minutes discussion.
