Assistant Professor in English


At the Department of Languages and Culture, a position as Assistant
Professor ("adjunkt") in English Language has become vacant as from
August 1, 2000. The successful applicant has a research profile in
English Applied Linguistics, with a specialization in such areas as
Media Discourse or Foreign Language Pedagogy.

Teaching includes (at the BA/MA levels) student project supervision on a
diversity of topics, and courses in e.g. English Grammar, English
Phonetics, and English Written Proficiency; and (in the International
Cultural Studies Program) student project supervision and courses
introducing students to the study of English language.

To be qualified, the applicant must have qualifications in English
Language, including a Ph.D. or equivalent in English Language and/or
Linguistics.

Information about the applicant's past teaching and administrative
experience should also be included. It is an advantage to have some
experience in supervising student projects.

Please note that a Danish Assistant Professorship is a "tenure track"
position, for which one of the requirements is that not more than 8
years should have elapsed since the applicant took his/her MA degree.

Teaching and examination is carried out in English throughout, but
foreign applicants should note that they would be expected to learn
Danish within the first two years of employment.

The current monthly salary for newly appointed Assistant Professors
amounts to approximately DKK 25,000 (variation depending on seniority),
according to the agreement between the Danish Confederation of
Professional Associations (Akademikernes Centralorganisation) and the
Ministry of Finance. Full time is 37 hours a week, of which at least 50
per cent is to be spent on research.

Linguist - New Media

We are an internet start-up company located in San Mateo, CA
(www.e-lingo.com). To be brief, we are developing a program that
automatically translates web pages and email text from one language to
another.

We are looking for a full-time linguist who has experience in the way in
which language is used in informal conversational media (email, chat sites,
pagers, etc.). This linguist would determine how best to deal with the
cultural, syntactic and semantic translation issues that arise in this
media, and hire consultants to compile or find bilingual dictionaries that
catalogue informal email-type language.

The linguist would also find a voice-recognition tool that we can integrate
into our translated email and chat service. They would determine how to deal
with the linguistic phenomena that occur in transliterating and translating
informal speech ("noise", run-on sentences, interrupted words, etc).

Qualifications: linguistics background with demonstrated familiarity in an
internet environment. Proficiency in two or more languages. Ability to work
with deadlines and on multiple projects at once. Ability to interact with
very diverse kinds of people in a professional environment. Strong
organizational and research skills, and an ability to learn in an
independent manner.

We offer $60,000 starting salary, with full benefits, 401K, and stock
options.
