The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobnet.html.

This page has been set up so that people can report on the employment
standards of various countries.

The TRANSLATION SERVICE of the EUROPEAN COMMISSION wishes to recruit 3
temporary officials (grade LA7/LA6 ) for its Development of
multilingual tools and Informatics units.

Applicants must be nationals of one of the Member States of the
European Union. Applicants should hold a university degree and have a
thorough and proven knowledge of computational linguistics.

A minimum of three years' experience managing projects in fields
relating to the posts is required. Applications should be sent no
later than 10 March 2000 (the postmark serving as proof). Applicants
may apply for several posts, provided they complete a separate
application form for each post and attach the necessary supporting
documents to each form.

Post 76T/SdT/99
Translation Service, AGL Directorate (General and
Language Matters), Unit 04 (Development of multilingual tools):
machine translation team. Task : developing the language pairs of the
Commission's machine translation system. Requirements: detailed
knowledge of the Internet, programming languages (C/C++, Perl, Java,
etc.) and markup languages (HTML, SGML, XML, etc.). Knowledge of the
technologies used for representing multilingual data on different
computer platforms. The European Commission has acquired development
licences for the Systran machine translation (MT) system. Every
Commission official has access to the system via e-mail or through a
Web interface. 18 language pairs are offered (of which 2 on a test
basis), and the level of quality varies. Language pairs with English,
French or Spanish provide the best results. The service enjoys great
success - it translated some 600 000 pages in 1999. Since the old MT
server is to be phased out within the next few years, the SdT
undertook in 1999 to migrate the existing EC Systran system by
building on the techniques, experience and results gained during
Systran S.A.'s migration of the commercial system developed at La
Jolla, California, several years ago. A Luxembourg-based contractor is
in charge of this migration, which has just entered its final phase.

and works on the development of new language pairs. He/she must have a

management systems (Oracle, Oracle-Context, Fulcrum, etc.) and search
