Three Lectureships / Senior Lectureships in Japanese
Department of Asian Languages and Literatures

Senior Lecturer / Lecturer in the Department of Asian Languages and
Literatures.  Specialists in any area of Japanese studies (linguistics,
cultural studies, literature, social sciences) are welcome to apply.
Applicants with a research record in classical or modern literature or
in language pedagogy are particularly urged to apply.

Applicants should have a PhD or equivalent (or expect to receive on
prior to taking up an appointment in 2000).  Applicants should have a
near-native competence in both Japanese and English.

a sample of their research writing.

Carnegie Mellon University seeks nominations for Dean of the College of
Humanities and Social Sciences.  Carnegie Mellon is a private major
research university that has achieved increasing eminence in recent
decades.  It consists of seven colleges-the Carnegie Institute of
Technology, the College of Fine Arts, the College of Humanities and
Social Sciences, the Graduate School of Industrial Administration, the
H. J. Heinz, III School of Public Policy and Management, the Mellon
College of Science, and the School of Computer Science.  The University
has approximately 5,000 undergraduate and 3000 graduate students, who
are taught and supervised by approximately 530 tenure track faculty, as
well as research scientists and lecturers.  Situated in the Oakland area
of Pittsburgh, the University provides not only research and academic
excellence, but allows its members to participate in the many cultural
and recreational opportunities available in this area, which includes
the University of Pittsburgh.  The city economy itself has changed from
industrial-based to service- and technologically-oriented.

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences is an integral part of the
University. The College itself consists of the seven departments of
English, History, Modern Languages, Philosophy, Psychology, Social and
Decision Sciences, and Statistics. It is also responsible for the
undergraduate Economics program.  The College has an enrollment of
approximately 1100 undergraduates and 170 graduate students, and also
provides courses to students in other sections of the University.  There
are approximately 115 tenure and tenure-track faculty members in the
seven units.  The current operating budget is about $17 million,
augmented by approximately $9 million in direct research expenditures.
The Dean has overall responsibility for both the educational and
research functions of the College as well as for crafting new
educational and research initiatives, often in conjunction with other
units in the University.

The College has also established a varied set of connections with the
other six colleges in the University and the University of Pittsburgh.
For example, the College has taken a leadership role in initiatives as
varied as cognitive neuroscience and brain imaging, the exploration of
large data sets, the interaction between writing and design, and the
acquisition of language.
Candidates should have distinguished records of scholarship, teaching
and service. Applicants should have experience and accomplishments
commensurate with the rank of full professor in one of the departments
of the College.  Candidates should also have the skills that would allow
them to be articulate advocates for the College in representing it
within the University and outside of it as well.  The external
representation will include some individual and some coordinated efforts
in fundraising.
