(textual, spoken, visual) in electronic dictionaries. In particular
the workshop aims at the presentation of current work and results of
national and international projects related to the workshop's
subject.

The scientific program will include several invited lectures as well
as submitted paper presentations. Submitted papers will be published
in a volume of Proceedings available at the workshop.

VENUE
The workshop will be held at the conference center of the University
of Patras, Greece. Patras is located on the west coast of Greece,

Subject: Tone Symposium

**************************************************
Call for Papers: Tone Symposium
June 5-7, University of Tromso
**************************************************

We invite abstracts for 45 minute talks on the topic of tone. Though
nearly a quarter of the languages of the world are tonal, the study of
tone remains a somewhat "exotic" specialization. Questions such as how
tone is represented featurally, and the typological characteristics of
tonal processes, are not satisfactorily answered to this day. An
obstacle to developing a coherent account of tone has been the lack of
understanding of what the parameters of variation in tonal systems are
across the spectrum of tonal languages. There are major typological
differences between tone systems, ranging from highly restricted tone
systems such as found in Scandinavian, to systems with 5 distinctive
tone levels, complex contours, and complex patterns of tonal
alternations.

Tone languages are not evenly distributed in the world, and
tonologists often lack an understanding of tone systems outside of
their chosen language families. The purpose of this three-day
conference is to work towards greater cross-fertilization in the
various subspecializations of tone, by bringing together specialists
in different areas of tonology in a forum which encourages exchange of
ideas and information between scholars with different geographical
interests. In this way, specialists in various areas of tone will
become more aware of the kinds of empirical issues and analytic
strategies encountered in languages outside of their particular
specialization.

The first day of the conference will be a workshop on three
typologically diverse areas of tonology conducted by specialists in
the typology of Chinese (Mathew Chen, City University of Hong Kong),
Scandinavian (Gjert Kristoffersen, University of Bergen), and African
languages (David Odden, University of Tromso and Ohio State). These
sessions are designed to acquaint participants with the core
structural properties of these divergent varieties of tone languages,
so that specialists in one area of tonology will better understand the
differences and similarities in nomenclature, theoretical assumptions,
analytical practices and empirical bases in the various tonal
traditions. The remaining two days of the conference will be
presentation of submitted papers. We are especially interested in
papers presenting unfamiliar data patterns and tonal phenomena from
less well known areas of tone.

Abstracts up to 2 pages in length should be received by March 31 at:

Tone Symposium
Department of Linguistics
University of Tromso
9037 Tromso Norway

Abstracts may also be submitted by email to david.odden at hum.uit.no in
Postscript or PDF formats, in plain text (with due consideration for
the problem of transmitted special characters by email), or by fax to
(+47) 7764-4239 in which case please send email indicating that a fax
submission has been sent. Submissions should include an abstract plus
a separate indication of name, paper title, surface mail address, and
email address for response.

Presenters will receive partial support for expenses of approximately
3.500 NOK = US $425.
