                IN JAPANESE   LANGUAGE   PEDAGOGY

Dear Colleagues,

It is our pleasure to inform you that the Tenth Virginia Regional
Workshop in Japanese Language Pedagogy will be held on Saturday, May 27
to Sunday, May 28, 2000, at American University  in Washington DC.  The
theme of this year's workshop is Understanding and Meeting the Needs of
Students for the 21st Century:  Japanese for Specific Purposes and
Populations.O  We are pleased to announce that Professor Meiko Inouye,
from  the School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), Johns Hopkins
University, will be our Keynote speaker and will present on Japanese for
"Professionally -specific" purposes.

We are writing you to welcome proposals for 30 minute presentations in
Japanese or in English  on the theme of teaching and learning Japanese
for various specific purposes and populations. Professionals at the K-12
level, community language centers, cultural or business institutions,
and higher education are encouraged to present.

Please send a title and a 300 word abstract to the workshop organizer by
February 10, 2000.  With your abstract, please include a cover sheet
containing the following information: the title of your presentation,
the name of the presenter(s), affiliation, mailing address, phone and
fax numbers, and e-mail address.  E-mail submissions of your proposal
are acceptable.  Please address all correspondence to Yuji Nakazato,

               Semantics and Linguistic Theory
                      Tenth Annual Meeting
                Cornell University, Ithaca, NY
                      June 2-4, 2000

SALT 10 invites submissions for 30-minute presentations (with 10 additional
minutes for discussion) on any topic in the semantic analysis of natural
language emphasizing the connection to linguistic theory. Authors should
submit 10 copies of abstracts, no more than 2 pages (1,000 words) long.
Authors' names, address, affiliation, status (faculty/student), phone
number and e-mail address, paper title, and list of prior or planned
presentations at other conferences should accompany the abstracts on a 3x5
card. E mail and fax submissions cannot be accepted.

Deadline for receipt of abstracts is Monday, January 31, 2000. The program
will be announced in early April 2000.

Guidelines:

SALT does not accept papers that by the time of the conference have
appreared or have been accepted for publication in a peer-reviewed journal.

Preference will be given to presentations not duplicated at other major
conferences (including LSA, NELS, WCCFL, etc.). Authors are asked to
indicate prior or planned presentations of their papers on the abstract
submission card.

Any person can submit at most one abstract as sole author and a second
abstract as co-author or two abstracts as co-author.
