COMPUTATIONAL LINGUIST -- Lexicon development (French)

Natural language capabilities are playing an increasingly high-profile
role in Microsoft's products, and the Natural Language Group plays a
key role in developing and shipping the linguistic technology that
makes those products possible. We are currently seeking a
computational linguist to extend and develop the French lexicon to
support advances in parsing, grammar checking, and semantic
representation, and to extend the derivational and inflectional
morphology. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work
with an experienced and dynamic product team, and will be working at
the leading edge of product development. Fluency in French is assumed.
The ideal candidate will also have:

(i)   experience in data-oriented linguistic research
      (both syntactic and semantic);

(ii)  a keen interest in issues of meaning representation across languages;

(iii) a flexible approach to linguistic theory, and the desire to combine
      theory with a strong practical orientation to turn great ideas into
      great products;

(iv)  experience in natural language processing and/or research using large
      natural language corpora;

(v)   significant programming experience; and

(vi)  an advanced degree in linguistics or a closely related discipline.

COMPUTATIONAL LINGUIST - Grammarian/grammar checker (French)

Natural language capabilities are playing an increasingly high-profile
role in Microsoft's products, and the Natural Language Group plays a

computational linguist to enhance and extend the French computational
grammar and grammar-checking system, in accordance with the overall
architecture of the Microsoft Natural Language Understanding
system. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work
with an experienced and dynamic product team, and will be working at
the leading edge of product development. The initial emphasis will be
on understanding the component for the grammar-checking system,
followed by the component for syntactic analysis.  The position
involves testing the accuracy of the syntactic analysis and text
critiques, and adapting the grammar-checking component to changing
specifications for grammar output and to changing needs of the end
user.  Native proficiency in French is assumed. The ideal candidate
will also have:

(i)   experience in data-oriented linguistic research

computational linguists for development of argument structure
representations on our French, German, and Spanish product teams. The
successful candidates will have the opportunity to work with an

leading edge of product development.  The primary responsibility of
these positions consists of designing and implementing the derivation
of semantic representations from syntactic parses, working in close
collaboration with the other members of the language team, and with
the other language teams.  Fluency in the language is assumed. The

COMPUTATIONAL LINGUIST - SEMANTICIST (English)

Natural language capabilities are playing an increasingly high-profile
role in Microsoft's products, and the Natural Language Group plays a
key role in developing and shipping the linguistic technology that
makes those products possible. We are currently extending our
technology into important new problem domains, including information
retrieval, information extraction, generation, and natural language
command & control applications. All of these problems require an
integrated understanding of meaning, and we are seeking an experienced
computational linguist to enhance, develop, and ship technology along
these lines in our existing natural language platform.  We recognize
that there is a great deal of diversity in this area of study, and, as
such, we welcome candidates from a broad variety of disciplines and
backgrounds.  Desirable candidates, for example, might have expertise
in any of the following areas:

statistical approaches to problems like word sense disambiguation or word
correlation;
knowledge-based techniques involving semantic networks or ontologies;
computational approaches to "dynamic" semantic theories like DRT,
Dynamic Montague Grammar or Context/File Change Semantics;
inter alia.

Qualified applicants should have an advanced degree in Linguistics,
Computational Linguistics, or CS (or equivalent experience), strong
coding skills, and a desire to see their ideas through to the product
stage.
