AND THE LANGUAGES OF THE WORLD * PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE
Symposium on the occasion of the 50th volume of Bibliographie Linguistique
under the auspices of the
Permanent International Committee of Linguists
organized by the
Koninklijke Bibliotheek (National Library of the Netherlands)
The Hague, 2-3 November 2000


The year 2000 marks the publication of the 50th volume of
Bibliographie Linguistique / Linguistic Bibliography (BL). Founded by
the Comité International Permanent des Linguistes / Permanent
International Committee of Linguists (CIPL), BL was first published in
1949 in a two-volume set covering the years 1939-1947. Half a century
later, BL has established itself as a major work of reference in the
field of linguistics and language studies, renowned for its
comprehensiveness and accuracy. The year 2000 also marks the beginning
of a new era for BL. After fifty printed volumes, BL is to be made
available on the Internet in the near future. Four volumes worth of
records totalling over 90,000 titles are now waiting to be accessed
electronically. To celebrate both these occasions, a symposium will be
held under the auspices of CIPL and organized by the Koninklijke
Bibliotheek (KB), the national library of the Netherlands, which
employs and houses the BL team.

The symposium will cover two related topics. First, some of the
international contributors to BL will elaborate on (socio)linguistic
aspects of some lesser known languages and on their bibliographic
coverage. Second, much attention will be given to the future of BL and
bibliography of linguistics in general.  The world-wide accessability
of files, texts and linguistic utterances creates challenging new
opportunities for the linguist. Combined searches in several
bibliographic systems, full-text availability of electronic
publications, and links to text and speech files are some of the new
possible developments in the field. In this contex several important
issues should be addressed: what is the expected need for lingusitic
resources in the near future; what bibliographic model is best suited
to meet this need; what is the relation between classical
bibliographies and the plethora of bibliographical sources on the
Internet; what opportunities are offered by the Internet for
cooperation between existing bibliographical projects; what are the
consequences of these developments for BL? Specialists in the field
are invited to a panel discussion on these topics, and all attendants
will be encouraged to take an active part in it.  The provisional

reception. Since, however, the number of participants is limited to
