Workshop on Ontologies and Lexical Knowledge Bases

Sept. 8-10, 2000: Sozopol, Bulgaria
The workshop aims to bring together researchers interested in the
dependencies between formal ontologies and lexical semantics in
general, and more specifically in the construction of lexical
knowledge bases. Among the issues discussed will also be the
various applications of lexical semantics to information
retrieval, information extraction and related fields.
The workshop will be a follow up of the CLaRK'2000 Summer School
on Computational Linguistics and Represented Knowledge, which
will take place in the period 25.08-8.09.2000(see
http://www.sfs.nphil.uni-tuebingen.de/clark/ss2000.html).
SCIENTIFIC PROGRAMME:
The workshop will include invited lectures and talks, research
presentations, student sessions, posters and discussions.

CALL for RESEARCH PRESENTATIONS and STUDENTS SESSIONS:
To provide an opportunity for broader access and participation of
all interested scientists, the organizers plan sessions of
research presentations as well as a student session. Research
presentations will be 30 min. long. Student presentations will
be 20 min. long. There will be also poster sessions.
DISCUSSIONS:
There will be three 1 hour discussions, on the following topics:
- modelling regular polysemy in lexical knowledge bases;
- lexical concepts vs. world knowledge, upper-level ontologies;
- ontologies and lexical knowledge bases for Information Retrieval.
SUBMISSIONS and APPLICATIONS:
Deadline for abstracts of research presentations: 30 June
Notification of acceptance: 20 July
Deadline for participants' applications (registration): 30 June

In all cases, abstracts of no more than 1000 words should be
submitted. One of the following formats should be used for the
abstracts: plain text, TeX, LaTeX, RTF/DOC, HTML. For TeX and
LaTeX submissions, be sure to include all the non-standard class
and style files used.
The preliminary version of the accepted papers should be send due
15 August. Typesetting instructions are available at the
http://www.sirma.bg/ontolex/proc
The preliminary versions of the papers will be distributed during
the workshop. A proceedings will be published after the
workshop.
Applications for participation (without presentation) should
contain a statement of interest - motivation to take part as an
essay of not more than 500 words.

ACCOMMODATION:
The workshop will take place in the town of Sozopol, Bulgaria.
Sozopol is one of the best summer resorts on the Black Sea coast,
famous for its unique mixture of ancient Greek culture, Bulgarian
traditional atmosphere (18th century), excellent climate and
entertainment facilities. In addition, it is the favourite place
of Bulgarian artists, both for performances and for relaxation.
It is situated to the south of Bourgas (to be reached by plane -
Bourgas Airport, trains - Bourgas Railway Station, or intercity
buses). It takes 40 minutes to reach Sozopol from Bourgas with
the buses and minibuses that run regularly.
The Workshop will take place in hotel "Flagman". For
accommodation, the participants can choose among hotel "Flagman",
which is relatively expensive but luxurious, and a number of
other options available in Sozopol: cheaper (but still good)
hotels, and rooms in private houses. The organizers can arrange
reservations for hotel "Flagman" and provide assistance with the
rest of the options.

Approx. expenses for meals, etc.: 8-20 BGL per day.
Registration fee:
100 BGL including the proceedings that will be sent after
the workshop. Students and participants from Central and
Eastern Europe will be eligible for a reduced fee of 25 BGL.
The reduced fee does not includes the proceedings which will
be available for an additional fee of 20 BGL.

ConSOLE 9 - SECOND CALL FOR PAPERS
The ninth meeting of the Student Organisation of Linguistics in Europe
(ConSOLE9) will be held at the University of Lund, Sweden, from 8 to 10
December 2000.
SOLE aims at providing students of generative linguistics with a possibility
of gaining international experience and a publication forum of their own.
Furthermore, SOLE strives to enhance contacts and cooperation between
students of generative linguistics in Europe and around the world. Papers
are solicited from students in the field of generative linguistics, more
specifically in, but not limited to, phonology, morphology, semantics, sign
language, language acquisition and syntax. Submissions may be sent either by
regular mail or e-mail. If regular mail is used, please send eight copies,
of which seven should be anonymous and one should contain your name,
affiliation, address and e-mail address.
Abstracts should be set in at least 10 point and must not exceed two pages,
including references, diagrams, and examples. Please send abstracts to:

E-mail submissions must be rich text format (RTF, preferred) or text only
(ASCII format). Abstracts submitted in this way should not exceed 1300
words, including references, diagrams, and examples. They should be sent to:

At most one individual and one co-authored abstract may be submitted; all
authors must be students -- undergraduate or graduate -- at the time of
submission.
The deadline for submission is 1 August, 2000 (regardless of mode of
submission). Abstracts received after 1 August will not be considered.
