Substitute lecturer in English linguistics needed at Lund University

The Department of English at Lund University in the south of Sweden is
looking for a substitute full-time lecturer in English linguistics.
The appointment is for an initial 6-month period (August 200 to
January 2001) with very good prospects for renewal for a further 6
months. The position includes a 20% reduction from full-time teaching
for research activities and a further 10% reduction for participation
in staff-meetings etc. Teaching duties are planned to include
introductory grammar, introductory phonetics, an introductory
linguistic survey course, a course on a topic of the applicant's own
choice, a syntax module in a somewhat more advanced linguistics course
and some supervision of term-paper writing. Our students are advanced
learners of English with good communicative competence but who need
training in grammatical accuracy and written proficiency.

Applicants should have a PhD degree in English (with suitable
linguistic focus) or linguistics (complemented by a sufficient
specific knowledge of English), although applicants with an MA or
equivalent in a suitable subject will also be considered.

Lund University is the largest institute of higher education
in Scandinavia with over 34 thousand students. The English Department,
Lund's biggest language department, provides education in both English
linguistics and Literature in English. The linguistics interests of
the department are broad - the current professor, Beatrice Warren is
best-known for her work in semantics, particularly fixedness. We also
have a long tradition in corpus linguistics and studies of spoken
English thanks largely to professor emeritus Jan Svartvik co-author
of 'The Comprehensive Grammar of the English Language'.

The department is situated close to the centre of the charming
mediaeval city of Lund, 10 minutes by train from Sweden's 3rd largest
city, Malmö, and (as of July 2nd), 45 minutes from the centre of the
Danish capital, Copenhagen by way of the brand new bridge over the
sound.

This position, although temporary, represents a wonderful opportunity
to obtain valuable teaching experience at a university of
international renown.
